The Best Modern Hebrew Grammar I've Seen!
By David Franklin Lee
Professor Etzion's book, The Routledge Introductory Course in Modern Hebrew, is much more than a Hebrew grammar. Although it deals with grammar very thoroughly, it is far more user friendly than a reference grammar (such as Lewis Glinert's The grammar of Modern Hebrew) and is designed to take a student from very beginning stages to a high level of accomplishment. In fact, it's amazing how much material this one book covers. It goes all the way through the most important verbs of the future tense. The grammar contains an amazing number of dialogues which are very interesting since they depict real-life situations. Having begun my study of Modern Hebrew in 1984 at U. of L., I'm presently using this grammar to teach Modern Hebrew to my 13-year-old son. I just happened to learn of this grammar and website a couple of months ago as I was searching for a Modern Hebrew grammar on the Internet. All I can say is that this grammar, just standing alone, is by far the best Modern Hebrew grammar I've seen. But, I think the neatest thing about this grammar is the accompanying website. Everything in the grammar's website (verb lists, dialogues, verbal conjugations and all inflected forms) are spoken in Modern Hebrew with a clarity of voice that couldn't be better! The dialogues alternate between male and female voices and use different speakers, making all of it most enjoyable. Words enlarge and become bold as a speaker speaks, a really cool feature. The pause/play button makes it easy to listen again to a part or all of a vocabulary list, dialogue, conjugation, or inflected adjective, etc. The website enables one to conquer forms through critical features such as the speaking "verb dictionary" that parses all tenses and relevant structures (derived stems), yet it has a kaleidoscope of fun features such as the "resources" area with up-to-date newspaper articles, "saying of the week," "stories in easy Hebrew," and much, much more. In fact, there's so much at Professor Etzion's website to help a student progress that it's hard to describe. With this book and website, a classroom experience is amazingly duplicated and one is immersed into Israel's culture using high-quality technology. This is clearly the best learning tool I've seen for the study of Modern Hebrew. And, I've found that Modern Hebrew is really a helpful door into Biblical Hebrew. David Lee (B.A. '89, U. of L. Good extensive course with some serious flaws
By Gwilym
I first wrote this review in 2009 when I bought the book, and I then gave it 3 stars. I'm now updating it to four stars (actually 4.5). I stand by my original review below, but I am glad to say that many of the issues I had with the book then has since been addressed by the author and the publisher. Crucially, all answer keys are now available for download on the website, which removes the main problem I had with this book. With these improvements, I believe it is the best course available in English to learn modern Hebrew. I stop short of giving full five stars as there are two even better courses, one in Danish (that course is far FAR superior on grammar in particular) and one in Italian (by far the best for an extensive vocabulary, around 2200 words including modern slang). However, if you're interested in a course in English, then this is by far the best option.
---original review from 2009 below--
This new course in Modern Hebrew is, to the best of my knowledge, the most extensive course yet published. There are many good sides to it, already explained in the other reviews here, so I will focus on the flaws that other reviewers have not mentioned. That is not to say that I don't like book (I do!), only that it could have been even better.
The main problem is the publisher's preference for the Internet (same problem in Routledge's Introductory Course to Persian). There is nothing wrong with having a supporting website for a course, quite the opposite, but a website is NOT an excuse to exclude fundamental parts of the course from the book.
I bought this book wrapped, so I did not have the opportunity to open it. Little did I expect that I was paying 90 Canadian dollars for a course with no sound recordings! Yes, all the sound recordings are available at the website, and that would be fair enough if you could download them. You can't. I enjoy taking a language course to a café, to the park or to the seaside and listen to the recordings on my iPod. That is not possible here. To use this course, you HAVE to be connected to the Internet and that, dear publisher, is simply not good enough.
The same thing with the keys to the exercises. Yes, you find them online but not in the book. Once again, that means that you cannot bring the book with you anywhere to read, you have to be seated in front of your computer to the be able to check your exercises. Once again, not good enough.
This is a very expensive course, and it would be worth the money if it would contain answer keys and you would either get the recordings or be able to download them. As it is, you pay rather much for NOT getting what much cheaper courses give you for free. The Internet is a great supporting tool but it is not a substitute.
While this is the most extensive course I've seen, and a must for the serious student, there are other courses that might be better for the beginner. Another course in Modern Hebrew, also published by Routledge, is Colloquial Hebrew Colloquial Hebrew (Colloquial Series). Although not as extensive as this course, it is much more user-friendly. The introduction to the Hebrew alphabet is smoother, the conversations are more engaging and, crucially, you get both the recordings and the answers to the exercises. For a total beginner, I would recommend starting out with Colloquial Hebrew and to use this course as the next step. For those who speak French, Assimil's brand new L'Hebreu sans peine L'hebreu Sans Peine/Hevrew With Ease: Pack Cd (Livre + 4 Cd) (French Edition) is another user-friendly course. Not nearly as extensive as this course, nor Modern Hebrew, but it has the funniest conversations and the best introduction to the alphabet.

GREAT CHOICE FOR THE INDEPENDENT LEARNER
By Brian
This is an outstanding text. A person learning Hebrew on his or her own could hardly do better. Access to the companion website alone is worth the price. Among the many things available on the website are recordings of each and every reading passage (preceded by new vocabulary read in various conjugated or declined forms), additional listening comprehension passages, additional readings passages, lots of audio visual charts/recordings (e.g., numbers, days of the week) and a truly remarkable electronic verb dictionary that gives a full conjugation of each verb in Past, Present, Future, Infinitive, and Imperative, as well as its English translation, root, binyan and gizra. Each form is written out with vowels and *is read aloud* by a native speaker. Finally - critical for the independent learner - the website contains a complete and thorough answer key for each and every exercise.
The publisher's description of the course as "adopting a communicative approach," is accurate. However, the author does not shy away from overt explanations of Hebrew grammar and syntax (in English). When he does so, however, the explanations are always clear and helpful (and never grammar for grammar's sake).
A person truly learning on his or her own might consider supplementing this course with one that contains somewhat longer reading passages (e.g., Hebrew From Scratch Textbook Part I (Hebrew Edition), and Hebrew From Scratch Audio CD Set Part I). The Routledge Introductory Course in Modern Hebrew, however, would be the very best of starting points.
