Complete ballet score, amazing price, quite readable

At this price, how wonderful to have the complete ballet score with the original performance notes right there on the staves. The paper and print are quite usable, clear enough and large enough. Tchaikovsky's orchestration is ever more breathtaking, the closer you look.

At last: the real thing.

I finally broke down and bought this excellent reprint of the full score. It completes my circle of "Nutcracker" appreciation: first as music (as a kid - two recordings and the piano pieces that drove my parents crazy), then as ballet (as a teen, the first ballet I ever saw), then as orchestration (as the celesta player - "I AM Sugar-Plum!"), and now I can look at the score with full appreciation, with more than one exclamation of "So THAT'S how he did it!" Everything from the translated Russian to the French stage directions adds to the value of this highly affordable publication. A real joy.

Finally, an affordable complete Nutcracker!

I have long awaited this publication. Shortly after I purchased the Nutcracker Suite from Dover 6 years ago, I wrote them multiple times asking them to consider publishing the complete work, but I was disappointed until now.

A reprint of an "Authoritative Early [Russian?] Edition," the score is very pleasingly engraved, close-spaced but not overly crowded. In the front, there is a translation of all the Russian notes that occur in the text, and all of the French stage directions are translated in footnotes at the bottom of the pages. Though it is over 500 pages, Dover has used paper thinner than their norm (yet with virtually no bleed-through), so the book is not too thick. It is, however, a little floppier than most of my other Dover scores. That, though, is a very small price to pay finally to own a full score of this most-popular ballet!

Finally, I can study the orchestration in some of the gems not found in the suite, such as the Waltz of the Snowflakes, Chocolate (Spanish Dance), and others--in an edition that is both affordable and well-made. I had been able to borrow a copy of the 2-volume paperback Kalmus edition (atrociously expensive for a student's budget) from my college library, and I was shocked at how poorly it was bound. The spine cracked after one or two GENTLE usings and pages were about to fall out. Such will not be the case with this Dover edition. I look forward to many years of pleasant study and enjoyment with this volume.

The Thinner Aquinas

This book is "The Thinner Aquinas," a targeted text specifically focusing on Aquinas's political and ethical writings.
Incluced are obvious selections from Summa Contra Gentiles and Summa Theologica (Five Ways of God's Existence and Essay on Law), but also included are excerpts from "De Regimine Principum."
There are hidden treasures in the back, excerpts from backgound sources and essays that influenced and were influenced by Thomisitic thought.
This book is geared towards a poltical scientist and poltical philosopher. For the theologian or the philosopher, however, I would reccomed Penguin Classics "Selected Writings."

A truly excellent anthology of Thomistic thought

This is a truly excellent selection of Thomistic writing, both by the Angelic Doctor and his critics and modern-day followers. It is not only comprehensive on the subject of Aquinas's politics and ethics but it is a good introduction to Thomism and natural law theory in general. Mortimer Adler's spanking of Bill Moyers on the subject of objective ethics is worth the price of the book just by itself.

Stacey Katz received her Ph.D from the University of Texas, Austin, in French Linguistics. Stacey Katz is currently the Director of Language Programs in Romance Languages and Literatures at Harvard University. She has published several pedagogical texts and presented her research at major conferences. Stacey's research interests include Applied French Linguistics, French syntax and French pragmatics.

Clear and practical

As a French professor I was impressed with the format of this book: it answers questions that students ask on a regular basis and it gives answers using English as the basis; as such it would be perfect for anyone doing translation work. The chapter on relative pronouns is particularly successful, so are the little notes about the difference between spoken and written French seldom explained in other grammars. Finally the spiral binding makes it very practical to use!

This book needed to be written: it fills a gap.

Having taught French in the American system for many years I believe that this book needed to be written because it fills a gap: most language textbooks and grammar books currently on the market are not practical when grammar is concerned. Having as their focus a communicative approach, many books overlook grammar these days. Often teachers don't really know how to answer the questions American students ask about French grammar satisfactorily. This book helps exactly with that: it anticipates students' questions and provides clear and concise explanations. I therefore appreciate this grammar book very much and think it is extremely useful. The book also fills a gap in that it discusses the differences between written and oral French, a concept almost all textbooks overlook. I believe that the book will certainly appeal to teachers of French (of all levels) but not only to them. It will also interest students who want to perfect their French language skills. Highly recommended.

Excellent teaching/learning tool

As an experienced professor, I am very impressed by this book. It is predicated upon those grammatical points that pose the greatest challenges for students, from their first year of study up until graduate school, although its ideal audience would be students who have a basic mastery of French grammar.

The book addresses those points that are not necessarily rule-bound, but depend on pragmatic and/or stylistic factors. Mastery of these issues results in more nuanced and native-like speech.

This book is not a verb compendium nor a review of grammar rules. It fills in the gaps that traditional textbooks leave. With the additional perspectives gained from this book, students will gain an enhanced understanding of what it means to speak natural-sounding French instead of un français livresque--bookish French.

This book is written in a style that is accessible and engaging. The voice of a sincere, encouraging teacher comes through clearly.

Katz-Bourns's book is an excellent addition to a serious French student's library. Bonne lecture!

Didn't like it.

I didn't like it. The anti hero has "trophy wife" that is more about how she looks than her giving him what he wants. It starts with him trying to get her to put out but she walks away to attend her gym class. He is sexually frustrated so he goes to his store and for whatever reason sets his sights on his "trophy wife"'s daughter, his step daughter. Problem is there is nothing that I read to transition me to his change from wife to step daughter, except he wants sex.

He buys the step daughter's compliance with jewelry and promised of money, you have a so so sexual scene, and ends with him thinking about getting rid of the wife. It read like these two people have no emotions or conscious, as I read nothing about either one in the novel from the characters. This is told from the man's POV. It read like two robots making out. No emotion.

What I hated is that this is all out of the blue. He comes straight from trying to get some from a wife he keeps describing as hawt and still wants, to settling for the step daughter that he buys like a gold digger prostitute.

This book made me feel bad for the wife. What a mess but the wife is better off without these two idiots. I hope she screws him in the divorce. I would read that revenge novel.

Tantalizing story but the typos drove me crazy. Did anyone proof this? Made it difficult to read because the word didn't fit the sentence. Otherwise I enjoyed but very short.

Too much of a good idea left me baffled

The premise of this novel intrigued me greatly, so it quickly jumped to the top of my reading queue. However, at about 57% I nearly decided to quit reading it due to some pronounced suspension-of-disbelief issues which I'll mention in a moment. I did finish the novel after reading a review here which applauded the fantastic conclusion, but such praise was unwarranted. The last quarter of the book attempted to provide readers with a "Being John Malkovich" head game experience, but all it did was leave me asking, "Huh?"

THERE MAY BE SPOILERS AHEAD...

Overall, I was left confused. We have the main character who may not even be the "main" main character, as she has gone backward and forward in time so many times that she keeps meeting different iterations of herself. Scenes are repeated à la Groundhog Day. There are several final scenes which don't turn out to be final scenes, and I believe (but am unsure, because I'm so confused) that the ending was a cliffhanger. The problem is that by then, I don't care. It seems like everyone has emerged from the confusion of repeated time travel loops and is ready to live happily ever after now, until, wait, that's just a fake reality. Oh, yeah? As a reader, I'm perfectly okay with washing my hands of the whole story now. I will NOT be reading sequels.

I struggled with major suspension of disbelief issues in two areas.

First and worst: the plot includes government meddling with a time-travel research company for its own nefarious purposes, and the author treated that plot point with the subtlety of a sledge hammer. I mean, come on. Is anyone expected to believe that a senator would ever be in the same room with her hired goons? Or that the same senator would write self-implicating emails to a character whose computer passwords are easily guessed by a teenager? Now I realize that this is young adult fiction, but we do young adults a disservice by presenting such a simplistic and naive view of politics and morality.

Additionally, the relationships in the family did not ring true. Inauthentic tones include the main character attempting to cheer a six-year-old whose twin was just kidnapped by winking at him. There's a parent saying, "I'm very angry with you, young lady, go to your room" after the same kidnapping. Inter-family dialogue in general is laboriously written and stereotypical, so the dynamics between the narrator and her assorted parents/siblings are superficial and do not advance our understanding of the characters.

Could this premise have been written better? I think so. I enjoy being disconcerted, to a degree, if at the end of the novel or the film, I can say, "Oh, I think it get it now!" or at least know which key scenes to re-read or re-view. There's no possibility of doing that in this novel. I am too baffled, and I don't care enough to unravel a far-too-convoluted timeline that is hopelessly tangled.

I'm resisting giving this two stars. The author deserves credit for the originality of her premise, though she should be more careful with its execution.

4.5 Fantastic YA Science Fiction

*I received a copy in exchange for my honest opinion*

Summary: Lara Crane wants to save her mother from an assassin's bullet, but going back in time creates a whole mess of problems.

Could Improve:
- Flashbacks. It's unavoidable in a book like this, but some of them really mess with the flow. I think another reviewer phrased it as "physical structure".

The Neutral:
- Side characters - Mike and Molly are cute. Donovan's hot and perfect. Mom's a workaholic. Dad's bitter. Rick's a mystery. While they're mostly 2-d, they work.
- The 15 minute thing - is kind of left up in the air. I guess that leaves time to explain it more fully in future books, but I'd have preferred to have it hashed out here.
- The Love Triangle - these bother me. This one's reasonably well-drawn out, but still annoying.

The Good:
- Fantastic writing - dialogue is believable; many chapters end in cliffhangers that make you want to move on.
- Storyline - It's mostly predictable, but there are a few lovely twists. I did find myself laughing near the end when Lara uses her unique ability to her advantage. It reminded me of a video game, and I shall say no more to keep this spoiler free.
- Lara Crane has a wonderful narrator voice that paints the world as she sees it.
- Chapters - length is good and cliffhanger ends are tantalizingly spaced out. (That part of the structure is excellent.)
- The ending - while there's certainly room for more, there is a sense of closure in the end.

Random Comments:
- I typically don't like time travel books because explaining the mechanics doesn't work for me, but this book avoids most of that by not trying to explain it.
- There are a few curses that fit the moment, but I'd still consider it a clean read.

Conclusion: If you like first person narrators with a strong voice, teens with awesome powers, or just solid YA science fiction, this is an excellent book to check out.

Promising plot ...

Promising plot, and decent writing except for far too many "this would never happen" and "no one would ever do or say this" moments. To avoid spoilers, rather than give specific examples (which other reviewers have already pointed out, anyway), I'll just say that character development and motivations needed more work. As mentioned in other reviews, characters spoke and behaved in ways that were very inconsistent with the circumstances.

Extremely implausible plots and events can work in fantasy and science fiction, but to make the reader believe in hugely impossible things, everything else, to the smallest detail, must be true-to-life.

About the Author
Stephen Vertigans is Head of School of Applied Social Studies, Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, UK. His research interests include Corporate Social Responsibility in the energy sector, with particular attention placed upon social impacts in Africa. To this end he has visited numerous African countries to help build capacity and to investigate how CSR approaches can help overcome deep rooted social problems and political tensions. Stephen was instrumental in the introduction of a MSc programme looking at CSR and Energy. He has published widely across a range of fields including Corporate Social Responsibility, African studies and forms of political violence.

Samuel O. Idowu is a Senior Lecturer in Accounting and Corporate Social Responsibility at the London Guildhall Faculty of Business & Law, London Metropolitan University, UK. He researches in the fields of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Corporate Governance, Business Ethics and Accounting and has published in both professional and academic journals since 1989. He is a freeman of the City of London and a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators. Samuel is a Vice President of the Global Corporate Governance Institute. He has led several edited books in CSR and is the Editor-in-Chief of two Springer’s reference books – the Encyclopaedia of Corporate Social Responsibility and the Dictionary of Corporate Social Responsibility. He is also a Series Editor for Springer’s books on CSR, Sustainability, Ethics and Governance. One of his edited books was ranked 18th in the 2010 Top 40 Sustainability Books by, Cambridge University, Sustainability Leadership Programme. Samuel is a member of the Committee of the Corporate Governance Special Interest Group of the British Academy of Management (BAM). He is on the Editorial Boards of the International Journal of Business Administration, Canada and Amfiteatru Economic Journal, Romania. Samuel has delivered a number of Keynote Speeches at national and international conferences and workshops on CSR and has on two occasions 2008 and 2014 won Emerald’s Highly Commended Literati Network Awards for Excellence. To date, Samuel has edited several books in the field of CSR, Sustainability and Governance and has written four forewords to books. Samuel has served as an external examiner to the following UK Universities – Sunderland, Ulster, Anglia Ruskin and Plymouth. He is currently an external examiner at Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen and Teesside University, Middlesbrough and Sheffield Hallam University.

Prof. Dr. René Schmidpeter holds the Dr. Juergen Meyer Endowed Chair for International Business Ethics and CSR at Cologne Business School (CBS). He is a guest professor at Nanjing University of Finance and Economics in China and the academic head of the “Zentrum für humane Marktwirtschaft” (Centre for Humane Market Economy) in Salzburg, Austria. For more than 15 years, he has worked and done research in the field of corporate social responsibility. He edited several publications on CSR for Springer, for example CSR in Europe (2015), Sustainable Entrepreneurship (2014), Social Innovation (2013) and Corporate Social Responsibility (2012/2015). Rene Schmidpeter is also Section Editor of the Encyclopedia of Corporate Social Responsibility and Editor of the intenational book series "CSR, Sustainability, Ethics and Governance" as well as the International Journal of Corporate Social Responsibility (JCSR) at Springer.
