Food Cures Book

This book is excellent if you are trying to find natural ways to fix problems related to your body. The book gives great practical suggestions and all recomendations can be find at your local whole foods or regular grocery store. Like many of these types of books it does recommend that you make permanent dietary changes and you should see some relief in whatever your condition is, but the book is great and I would highly recommend it.

Some good information..

This book does have some good information, but it does not talk at all about eating organic food, grass fed beef, free-range eggs, etc, or the benefits of a 100% plant based whole foods diet. The toxic pesticides and artificial hormones in our society has a huge effect on our health and some ailments probably wouldn't even exist if it weren't for them.

I can't quite believe it but yes, it really does work.....

UPDATE 11/23/11 - I don't usually "update" my reviews as some do, but I wanted to extol the virtues of this very simple yet effective book and support the author in any way I can. Chances are if you are looking at reviews then you are where I was about two weeks ago. Searing, agonizing pain in my left shoulder anytime I lifted or rotated my arm a certain way. I have been doing these exercises for less than a week and I would estimate an almost complete recovery in my left shoulder. This is the same shoulder attached to the same arm that I couldn't lift to put on a sweater just ONE WEEK AGO. When sitting in a chair with arm-rests I had to keep my arm by my side because placing it on an arm-rest caused intense pain. I have been performing the stretching exercises the author recommends twice daily and will begin the strength training exercises as soon as I obtain a pair of light weights. I now understand that I have an inherent weakness in this shoulder so I hopefully continue doing these exercises. Once again, it is astonishing how quickly these exercises corrected my shoulder problems. To the author, once again, thank you....

On a recent episode of PARKS AND RECREATION, the character of Ron Swanson comments on his philosophy of recommendations. He states (and I am abbreviating) that he doesn't recommend anything he doesn't use and love. He then goes on to extol the virtues of a "military-issue mustache trimmer". Funny stuff. What isn't funny was the pain and discomfort I experienced until I purchased this invaluable book. As background, I am a 52 year old male, in reasonably decent shape. I do quite a bit of work around our house, which we just recently renovated. Lots of lifting, cutting, chopping, sawing....so a great deal of shoulder strain. About 3 months ago I developed a slightly stiff shoulder. Within a month this pain became almost unbearable. I was unable to lift my arm above shoulder length without SEARING pain in my shoulder area. My shoulder would not rotate, instead I had to move my entire body to accommodate my aching shoulder. I tried a prescription of Prednisone and when that didn't help I started taking three or four Advil just to do the basic, daily chores. I tried icing the shoulder, then slathering it with one of about 10 different rub-on liniments that people had recommended. I tried hot baths and hot showers. I used a compression shirt from UnderArmour because that seemed to help with my sore tennis elbow at times. Sleeping at night was a nightmare because every time I turned over the shoulder pain would wake me up. In fact, the only activity that provided any relief was raking leaves. Something in that motion was stretching out a muscle or a tendon, but then I ran out of leaves to rake. (One of the exercises in this book mimics the action of leaf-raking). All of these remedies provided at best, temporary relief. I never consulted a doctor or had an MRI done on the shoulder, but friends told me I had a frozen shoulder and possibly a tear in my rotator cuff. The pain got worse and worse until about a week ago when I needed help to raise my arm high enough so I could wear a sweater.

Three days ago I received this book. Instead of just rushing to the chapters where the exercises are located I started at the beginning and I am really glad I did. The author provides detailed explanations and drawings, which fully describe the various joints, muscles, and tendons at work in the shoulder area. Then I got to the stretching exercises. After doing all the exercises that first day I noticed I slept a little more comfortably that evening. On the second day of performing the exercises I noticed about a 10% reduction in pain with some improved mobility. Now it is day three and I can't believe it but I CAN LIFT MY ARM ABOVE MY HEAD. Yes of course there is still some pain, but it isn't the searing stabbing pain I had experienced. In fact I just reached up for something on a high shelf without experiencing any stabbing pain. THESE EXERCISES REALLY DO WORK. I don't know if the exercises will work for everyone with agonizing shoulder pain but it is working for me. I cannot thank this author enough for making this book available so thank you, thank you, thank you!

Would have liked more info

Comes up a little short for me. His exercise routines are sound, and I agree about strength exercises helping, but I would have liked to have seen more about the anatomy involved with compound movements. He did not show anything about raising your arm from different angles to the body and what tendons and muscles are affected. Also, movement with a bent or straight arm covers different areas. The illustrations were not very good either. It would also have been nice to see more about tailoring a routine based on the location of the injury. I also believe that exercises using the range of motion you do have to strengthen areas of the rotator cuff and adjacent muscles is helpful.
I think it is too expensive for what it offers.

Calcium Deposits in Rotary Cuff

I am 56 years old. I have calcium deposits in my left rotary cuff. I have known things were not quite right for 15 years but had an x-ray for the first time 1 1/2 years ago and I have had 2 cortisone shots since. This gets old & you have to wait to get them & I don't want to depend on these. I almost had to get another one 2 months ago but iced up like crazy, read & reread this book & did the exercises. I now feel as good as a week after I get a shot. I've been to physical therapy, but this book has exercises that I was not shown. I do the stretches 5 days a week (3 minutes total time) and I lift the weights - I am up to 5 pounds. I think lifting the weights & increasing the pounds is more effective than the bands at physical therapy.

Unusual but entertaining tale

About the only reason I do not give this a five star review is because a couple of the themes explored are not particularly my "cup of tea", though all the ideas explored in this quick but quite fun little tale are well-written. The author is very skilled at turning out this sorts of short urban-fantasy-with-erotic overtones stories. The events experienced by the main character are describe quite vividly and with flair; an enjoyable read for any fans of the genre(s) explored.

Horrible production quality, poor writing

If I were the author or any of the persons mentioned in the production credits, I would be exceptionally embarrassed to have my name associated with this book.

Although the book was "set" (production supervisor Pamela A. Pelton) at the McGraw-Hill Professional's Hightstown, N.J., "composition unit," the print appears to be about 150 d.p.i. In other words, a cheap $100 laser printer would have done a MUCH better job. Legibility is a publisher's #1 priority, and this publisher has failed miserably.

The illustrations and photos are terrible. Many appear to be 50th generation copies, or worse. Most photos are hard to discern what is what. Old engineering drawings are simply scanned in without any evaluation and modification. For instance, drawings have many extraneous distractive elements which add nothing for the reader, such as dimension lines, center lines, etc. Also, exploded views and their callouts are simply sized to fit the page, instead of the other way around. So many drawings and their callouts are way too small for the amount of detail. Add the poor print quality, and you can imagine how unpleasant it is for the reader. Many illustrations are completely useless due to being reduced so much in size from their original.

If you find passive voice annoying, DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. There is little variation from passive construction. Furthermore, there is little attention to paragraph construction, with many paragraphs dozens of sentences long. At the sentence level, many sentences seem to be arbitrarily chopped up to make shorter ones.

I had been looking forward to studying this book cover-to-cover (as I just did with "Shipboard Electrical Power Systems," a book I was very impressed with), but the labor required to read the poor legibility will not make it a pleasant undertaking.

This textbook was selected for the 2010-2012 power plant technology AAS course program. The text is way too small and the photos are also hard to discern.

Although this textbook is very detailed and theoretical in nature for a first time PPT student is is horrible to understand. Especially if you have no lecture's and are a online student!!!

This textbook should only be included as a pre-engineer course and not first time learners.

About the Author
Joseph Hilaire Pierre René Belloc ; 27 July 1870 16 July 1953) was an Anglo-French writer and historian who became a naturalised British subject in 1902. He was one of the most prolific writers in England during the early twentieth century. He was known as a writer, orator, poet, satirist, man of letters, and political activist. He is most notable for his Catholic faith, which had a strong impact on most of his works, and his writing collaboration with G. K. Chesterton. He was President of the Oxford Union and later MP for Salford from 1906 to 1910. He was a noted disputant, with a number of long-running feuds, but also widely regarded as a humane and sympathetic man. His most lasting legacy is probably his verse, which encompasses cautionary tales and religious poetry. Among his best-remembered poems are "Jim, who ran away from his nurse, and was eaten by a lion" and "Matilda, who told lies and was burnt to death".

Catholic Christianity and Roman Civilization...

This old classic by English Catholic author/historian Hilaire Belloc provides a Catholic response to modernist and Protestant polemics against the Church. Belloc shows that the Catholic Church was essential in perserving the knowledge and greatness of pagan antiquity, insuring that after the "fall" of the Roman Empire, European civilization would have another springtime (in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance).
Another central part of Belloc's thesis is that the Roman Empire never really "fell" to "superior" barbarian hordes as it has been presented in some textbooks. In fact, the Roman Empire absorbed all tribes who came to then for the benefits of civilization. Out of this New Barbarian Order came feudal Europe, formed by classical learning and Christianized by the Catholic church. In the Dark Ages, the faith preserved this civilization while it was under attack from the Muslims, Magyars and Vikings in succession. It was in these centuries that the seeds that would later flower in the Middle Ages and Renaissance were nurtured and protected.
Belloc concludes by showing the devestating impact (personal, economic and in government) that the Reformation had on European civilization (a thesis that he explores in greater detail in How The Reformation Happened and Characters of the Reformation). He proclaims the chief of effect of the Reformation was "the isolation of the soul" and chief by-product was a progressive sense of dispair. He then boldly states that Europe's former glory will be confined exclusively to history textbooks unless the continent returns to the Faith that shepherded and nurished its greatness.
I felt that this, like all of Belloc's books, was an excellent read that boldly defends Catholic truth and explodes many of the Protestant assumptions that are still latent in American and Northern European civilization over 80 years after the book's publication.

The Deep Roots of Rome

This is a look at European history from 20,000 feet. Belloc describes four major transitional periods:

1. From pagan to Christian Rome during the Empire.

2. From Empire to Dark Ages.

3. From Dark Ages to Middle Ages.

4. From Middle Ages to Reformation.

Among the important themes Belloc highlights:

1. Roman tradition and influence runs deeply and continuously through European history. By so demonstrating, he debunks the myth of the "master race"--a popular theme among his intellectual contemporaries. Pity so few listened to him.

2. It was the Catholic Church that held Europe together through the centuries, the glue of our civilization. In his own words, "Europe is the church, and the Church is Europe."

I found his analysis of Empire to Dark Ages particularly helpful. Belloc makes good sense out of the period's confusingly intertwined barbarian and Roman influences and its complex political and military dynamics. Bottom line: the Roman Empire was never conquered from without; in reality, it changed gradually but profoundly from within, all the while retaining its vital social and spiritual roots.

Belloc's review of the Reformation, especially Britain's leading role in destroying the Unity of Faith, makes for sad, surprising and sobering reading even today. (For a much fuller and yet more moving treatment, read Belloc's "How the Reformation Happened.")

For Belloc, the European ideal came during the Middle Ages, when people were unified in faith and hungered for truth more than riches. By his day, Europe had reached new lows of disunity, sophistry, and capitalist greed. Belloc was one of the few prominent thinkers to see these evils early on and predict their awful consequences. Although his subject was history, I think Belloc was writing with an eye to the future, in the hope that we might understand the errors of our past and correct them before too late.

Christianity, civilisation and the fall of the Roman Empire

This book is a quite old Belloc classic but nethertheless it invites new generations of readers on a historical journey full of surprises and old truths. The work is pivotal among his historical research on the ancient roots of our Christian and European civilisation as well as the causes and consequences of the Protestant revolutionary movement, known as the Reformation.
The main thesis is that in contrary to mainstream Protestant and anticlerical historians in the beginning of 20th century when Christianity was acknowledged as a factor deteriorating the glorious Roman Empire, the contrary must be said. The Christianity had the central role in transferring the high moral and cultural values of the Old, already very decaying Empire into the future. The new religion of the gospel refused all that was the decadent and fruitless in Roman culture but it rescued much of it's precious knowledge, positive elements, vitality and potentiality for future expansion, elements which would perish due to the fall of the empire. According to Belloc the main fault of modern historians not recognising this, is their lack of understanding for Christianity as well as an anti-Catholic bias among many of them. Belloc points out an oversimplification done by the scholars on the importance of the barbarian tribes affecting the Empire and their impact on the culture of it.
The next important conclusion Belloc draws from his genial analysis is that the barbarian hordes, which were believed to affect so much the dissolution of the Roman Empire where de facto "romanised" and dominated completely themselves by the Roman culture. The cause of the fall of the Empire is not to be sought in the first hand in the infiltration of these barbarians, mostly German and Slavic tribes. These tribes sought for and were admitted, dominated and adapted quickly by the Roman civilisation. They were little bit alike, in economical terms, today's refuges from the third world longing for the riches and privileges of the Western World. The causes of the fall of Rome laid deeper and showed out as the weakening of the central government, the power and initiative of the Emperor's. The puny barbarians was just an episode but no main factor and cause in the Roman decay. They neither rescued nor conveyed the rich culture of Rome in their capacity of themselves being barbarians. The work of Christianity on the roman culture created our civilisation and gave potential to all the fruitful future civilisatory enterprises of the Europe and the West.
Belloc describes further the importance of the middle ages as well as factors and causes for the protestant reformation. In this part of the book Belloc polemizes with the protestant scholars and gives credible proof for the fact that the so called protestant movement was in fact a kind of relapse into what Belloc defines German barbarism. Belloc seeks the causes of the Reformation in the inherent civilisatory weakness in the Northern German lands. This weakness was, according to Belloc, caused by the fact that the roots of the Roman-Christian culture and civilisation did not penetrate the mind and conscience of inhabitants in this area. His arguments seem to have some weakness and even a kind of anti German propaganda but there may be some truth in Belloc's conclusion.
A book worth while. Highly recommended. On the minus side is the small size and due to it a briefness in presentation of facts and arguments as well as Belloc's clear but little bit boring language. Nevertheless these obstacles are small compared to the interesting facts and revelations.

About the Author

Steve Robinson drew upon his own family history for inspiration when he imagined the life and quest of his genealogist hero Jefferson Tayte. The talented London-based crime writer, who was first published at age sixteen, always wondered about his own maternal grandfather—‘He was an American GI billeted in England during the Second World War,’ Robinson says. ‘A few years after the war ended he went back to America, leaving a young family behind and, to my knowledge, no further contact was made. I traced him to Los Angeles through his 1943 enlistment record and discovered that he was born in Arkansas…’

A Quirky Formula

The best parts of this book were the flashbacks to the Nazi era before and during the war. The story follows two young German friends who had served in the Hitler youth and the SS together. It flashes forward to the present day, when an adoptee is seeking to find the identity of his parents who he thinks he has traced to Germany in the 1940s and 50s. This searcher, named Jefferson Tayte, believes his grandfather to be one of these two friends, one of which was a soldier with principles, the other a war criminal known as the Demon of Dachau. The portion of the narrative set in the past had all the Nazi intrigue you could hope for, and it is well thought out and constructed. The characters seem believable and hold the reader's interest. There are plot twists amid the chaos of war, and the tale is grippingly told. Unfortunately, the portion set in the present doesn't seem plausible, as two of the main antagonists are in their nineties, yet are alert and active. The author seems to want to use the formulaic elements of historic Nazi intrigue plus up to the minute news and technology. He probably should have chose one path or the other, either a modern research story, or a recreation of history. The outcome of the resulting combined narratives leaves the reader with not enough of the wartime story, and too much of an unlikely hodge podge conflict with thuggish neo nazis and nonagenarians in the present time. This approach might have worked better if the present-day portion had been set in the 1960s or 70s. The writing was well done and engaging, yet the story could have been better thought out.

Jefferson Tayte finally does his own genealogy.

I have been waiting - patiently - for the fifth Steve Robinson book about genealogist, Jefferson Tayte. Now that "Kindred" is here and I just finished it, I will be waiting again for his next adventure. "Kindred" has allowed "JT" to finally discover his own history (something that has eluded him his entire adult life). JT always seems to get himself in trouble while searching for client's ancestors and this was definitely no exception to the rule! I loved the way Mr. Robinson seamlessly moved from World War II action to the present day story. Telling JT's story from his parents' point of view and then switching to JT's search for that story could have been confusing but the author made it very clear. I will admit that every time he came back to the present time, I wanted to go back to the history part. There were so many twists and turns that I found myself turning on my kindle even when I had but five minutes to read! I really wanted to know how it would all come together! I certainly wasn't disappointed. If you are a new reader to Jefferson Tayte stories, I would suggest you start with the first book, "In The Blood", just to get to know the recurring characters. However, "Kindred" can stand alone. Try it, I loved it and I'm pretty sure you will, too!

Not Like the Other Jefferson Tayte Books, Much Darker

While I'm a HUGE fan of Jefferson Tayte , his character, and the mysteries he solves through genealogy this book was less than hoped for. I've read all five books and greatly disliked the violence depicted and the darker tone the book took as a whole. I stuck it out only because I wanted Jefferson's back story of him discovering his own family history. The book was dark and very much unlike any of the previous books. Will I read more? Not immediately. I'll wait for the reviews to come out and then decide. Until then I'm off to find a new author.
