Grade 2-5-Freddy the Pig books by Walter R. Brooks have gone in and out of print for the last 40 years, but he gets a new life with this recording about his time as a politician. Freddy and his farmyard friends on Mr. Bean's farm decide to start the First Animal Bank of Centerboro and the First Animal Republic to show how responsible they are while the Beans are on holiday in Europe. Some of the vocabulary is beyond the level of elementary students today, but by listening to the clear reading of the book, the words can be understood in context. Narrator John McDonough gives each animal a different voice and personality. Each tape is clearly labeled for the chapters included. The audio versions of Freddy the Detective, Freddy the Pilot, and Freddy Goes to the North Pole, also narrated by McDonough, are available from Recorded Books as well.

One of the best, but probably most challenging, Freddy books

I have read now seven or eight Freddy books with my six year old son. In terms of story and language, some have been very engaging and well written, and some not. Occasionally, these books have more sophisticated themes, and have introduced my son to new ideas such as the power of the press, and the justice system.
Freddy the Politician was one of these, and likely the most sophisticated (keeping in mind that we are dealing with books about talking farm animals) of the series. It was written during WWII, but well before the US became involved. This background is very apparent once the story hits its stride.
The animals decide to set up a bank, and then to form the First Animal Republic. In setting up the bank, they feel that it needs a sober and worldly president, so that it will be a credible institution. John Quincy Adams, a woodpecker visiting from Washington DC, seems to fill the bill and takes the position.
Soon, John Quincy has brought in his father, Grover, to run for president of the FAR, and sinister plans are afoot. The election has everything: manipulation of voters lists, ballot fraud, insincere election promises, pork barrel, you name it. When these fail to win him the election, Grover takes power by coup.
Overnight, he is arresting his political enemies, annexing the Sudetenland - I mean, the neighbouring farms, and seeking world domination.
How is that for a tense story line in a kids book?

Gosh. I don't see how anyone can give "Freddy the Politician" less than 5 stars. Freddy's "dropping in" to the board meeting at the bank -- Mrs. Wiggins' wonderful advice about the uses of laughter -- Bertram the robot going beserk and grabbing his own operator's tailfeathers -- it's all vintage Freddy. How great to have this classic back in print. Be sure to buy an extra for your local library when you buy one for yourself.

Although the Freddy books are considered children's literature, I know that many adults - my son and I included - enjoy the stories as well. Some of the books have been birthday or Christmas gifts for a now 15 year old grandson who has enjoyed the stories for several years. He's always delighted to receive a Freddy book.

HI, Small powerful book. I love how he says things. I agree..mostly people are playing it safe and are not going all in like on a poker game with God. He speaks boldly...God is not an insurance plan. Most people are holding back...think they may miss out on life. He says...they will gain more than they miss..it will be an adventure. He is honest. Most are informed but not transformed he says. Ask God to follow you? or are you following Jesus? I enjoy this boldness...just what I needed.

Grabs your attention immediately!! Powerful! Life changing! Challenging. Thought provoking. Every sentence has so much impact, you have to read it more than once. Stimulates great discussion with others that have read it. Was great for our book club. You cannot read it and do nothing different with your life.

My son still asks for this book

I checked this book out of the library for my 2 1/2-year old son for 2 weeks. He brought this book to me and asked me to read it to him ALL THE TIME. At the end of the 2 weeks, I renewed it for another 2 before returning it. While it may not be MY favorite children's book, it certainly is his, and shouldn't that be what matters to us moms? I am planning to give him this book for Christmas since he still asks for the "train book" everyday. If he hears me say "hey" he instantly squeals "Get off our train!" Obviously this book left a lasting impression on him and that's more important to me than whether the illustrations should or should have not won the Parents' Choice Award.

My child's absolute hands-down favorite

My daughter loves this book. It captivates her imagination in a way no other book does. She asks for it by author, in fact.

"John Burningham book, mommy?"

I know that part of what she loves is the mild naughtiness of yelling out, "Hey! Get off my train!" Something she'd never be allowed to do in life. She knows the sequence of the weather and how they connect with what's going to be imagined for play by heart. Honestly, it's hard to convey what "foggy" is unless you happen to have some of it, and in upstate NY it's mostly foggy in the very early morning, or late night, but this book finally got the idea across. She never takes any notice of what people hunting or clear cutting or anything like that means, and I don't undertake to explain it. That part, for us, is just the reasonthe animals want to get on the train. Hitchcock had a word for this kind of plot mechanism: the MacGuffin. The thing everyone talks about that the reader doesn't care about, but gives everyone in the story the impetus be doing their thing.

Anyways, one day we were on the Erie canal and we saw a crane, and my little 3 year old says to me, "Look mommy, a crane!" And I knew exactly where she recognized it from, because it's not as if cranes live in our backyard, so that says something about how wonderful the illustrations are. And I do absolutely love how the little boy conveys so much meaning with so few words. "Don't make too much noise with the shovel," is all he says, but instantly you're cast as a co-conspirator, sneaking out on a grand adventure to who knows where.

I understand the other posters negative comments about the environmentalism nonsense and the rude mother, but it is a book meant for children, not parents, and after all, we are right there to talk about how out-of-it the mother is by the child's standards. Parents do talk to their children in that way. It serves as a reminder to me that sometimes I exasperate my child as much as she does me, and there can't be any harm in that.

More Whimsical Than Dark, A Marvelous Book!

This book features two seminal kid pleasers--animals and trains. I am a teacher who has read the book to dozens of children who have really enjoyed it. I would like to defend it agains the "dark" criticism. In my experience, children haven't been scared, upset or bothered by the story or the illustrations. They have been empathetic however, and perhaps that bothers some adults. The illustrations are lovely, misty, giving a feeling of riding the train out at sunset around the world. The little boy hero of the story has fun, whimsical adventures with all of the animals. My experience with kids is that they like the illustrations and smile when when they discover an interesting detail hidden in the mist. The story has a positive message--the little boy finds room on his train for all the animals, and they end up at his house. Perhaps the ending is simplistic and overly optomistic for some, but it's a little kids fantasy story! I believe the underlying message is positive and possible, that we can make room in our lives to exist in peace with all G-d's creatures. I have had kids act out this story as a skit and make animal cosutmes, and they had a ball doing that. Also, kids could make up other adventures for the little boy and his train, involving other endangered animals. One of the best books I have found for young kids that tells about endangered species in a poetic way, which helps them understand the basic concepts involved. Again, it is simplistic, but this book is for pre-schoolers and early elementary kids who are just being introduced to the topic. Although the third and fourth graders who did the skit liked it as well! It could spark discussions with kids about what's really going on in the world with endagered species, and what people can or should do about it, but that's our job as parents and teachers, to help kids cope with and understand life with all it's highs and low and contradictions.

Michael E. Hasselmo is Professor of Psychology and Director of the Computational Neurophysiology Laboratory at Boston University, where he is also a faculty member in the Center for Memory and Brain and the Program in Neuroscience and principal investigator on grants from the National Institute of Mental Health and the Office of Naval Research.

Excellent text for undergraduate and graduate neuroscientists!

This is an awesome text book that brings together recent work over the last 15 years with preexisting learning and memory concepts. Short of reading 30 review papers, Hasselmo discusses key concepts that will ultimately shape the field of spatial memory, particularly the role of theta rhythm in the EEG. For any entry-level neuroscientist studying learning and memory, this is required reading to become up-to-date on the field.

Difficult but worth struggling through

This author is one of the foremost experts in memory and he really takes a lot of time to explain his theories and experimnts. I learned so much from my multiple reading of his book, it was well worth it. This is not easy reading for the lay person interested in the neurological underpinnings of memory but there is a lot to learn from this. If you have the drive to read the book a couple of times you will glean much.

Not worth the money!

A collection of off-the-wall junk translated mostly from the Don Army and published at a HUGE price for the value you get. Very little military information, mostly behind the scenes correspondence. Should be free with a hair-cut.
