About the Author
Peter McLean was born near London in 1972, the son of a bank manager and an English teacher. He went to school in the shadow of Norwich Cathedral where he spent most of his time making up stories. By the time he left school this was probably the thing he was best at, alongside the Taoist kung fu he had begun studying since the age of 13.

He grew up in the Norwich alternative scene, alternating dingy nightclubs with studying martial arts and practical magic.

He has since grown up a bit, if not a lot, and now works in corporate datacentre outsourcing for a major American multinational company. He is married to Diane and is still making up stories.

Hangdog Hero Pilots Great Supernatural Noir

It’s safe to say that Don Drake, a London-based diabolist-turned-hit-man for hire, has certainly made a lousy life for himself. He’s stuck in a miserable partnership with a raucous, foul-mouthed archdemon that he keeps locked in his study; he self-medicates with alcohol to forget the people he’s killed; he’s hung-up on an old girlfriend who won’t give him the time of day; and he’s under the thumb of Wormwood, a nasty demon and local club-owner whom he happens to owe quite a bit of money. Yes, life is hell. And it’s about to get a lot worse: before the story ends, Drake will find himself tied to a chair and interrogated with a power-drill; seduced by a kinky red-head with a thing for whips; get jumped outside a night club and beaten up by aforementioned red-head; and contend with a nearly-fallen angel who has an annoying penchant for Russian cigarettes. And that’s all before a climactic trip to the underworld. What’s a demon-plagued magician to do if he wants to survive in this business?

I have to say, I really enjoyed this novel. When the story first opened, I thought Drake was going to be just another stoic Sam Spade type. Not so! Imagine if Jesse Pinkman, the young, sensitive delinquent hero of Breaking Bad, was in the soul-destroying business of dark magic instead of making meth. Yes, you’re right. It wouldn’t end well. And unfortunately, this too is the case for Drake. Another thing I must mention is narration. With some first-person stories, a narrator describes events and you never really get a sense of his character. This author, however, does it right, allowing the hero’s hang-dog personality to really shine through as he narrates his ensuing misadventures with sarcasm and self-deprecation. Drake is a bang-up job indeed.

Now, while I could just haphazardly recommend this for any fan of urban fantasy, I won’t. The story deals with a variety of seedy characters, and the plot itself takes several dark turns. Therefore, I can really only recommend it for fans of dark fantasy, or for hard-boiled mystery lovers who don’t mind a lot of supernatural elements thrown into the mix.

Out Of My Genre, Into My Dark Fantasies!

Having challenged myself to read 26 books in 2016, Drake was my first read of the new year - and what a way to start! A step outside of my typical genre, I initially wondered if I'd be able to keep up with the subject matter without needing Google on speed-dial. I needn't have worried, Don Drake anticipated my lack of "other worldly knowledge" and kept me up to speed - without slowing down the action.

From one-liners that leave you smirking long after the fact, to complex, unpredictable characters that continue to develop far beyond the final page - Drake draws you in and doesn't let you go.

"All of them were very well dressed and various degrees of drunk, but in that well-behaved sort of way that only posh people seem to be able to manage."

This book is a little tough to review, as I'd normally pass on a book where the main character(Don Drake) can accurately be described as a scumbag who spends an awful lot of the story getting beat down(I normally like my protagonists to give the beat downs). What makes this a winner for me is the excellent writing and the way Drake is pretty hilariously self-depreciating. This is raunchy, foul humor and not for readers who aren't big on tons of bad language(I like it if done right). The Burned Man is a character all in itself and is quite funny in it's own way and the supporting cast is also very good. This will probably appeal to readers that like the Sandman Slim and Yancy Lazarus books. This apparently new author is now very much on my "to watch" list and I can't wait to see what he comes out with next!

kept my interest, and did not guess the ending

Second book in Grafton's alphabet series. I liked this one better than A is for Alibi. The story was more complex and I did not guess the ending. This is a quick and simple read. The writing isn't great literature but it will hold your interest. I find her descriptions to be too much at times, and a bit tedious and unnecessary. There are some plot holes. I have read four of these novels now and there are plot holes in every one. But if you can overlook some logic issues, and the continually dumb things Kinsey (the detective) does (like never having her gun handy), then these books are enjoyable.

I just finished this book and really like the character, Kinsey Malhone. I ran across this book series completely by accident at the laundromat one Sunday morning. Somebody had brought a stack of old books and left them there for the customers to read. That book was C is for Criminal. Needless to say it made me curious about the others. I purchased B, A and D. I have A & D yet to read this summer. If they are as good as B & C then I will explore the rest. So far I like them very much.

It was only the second in the series that I've read, but I like Grafton's style, and the realism that surrounds her stories. Some are so dramatically oriented that sometimes the realism is lost in the process. Her novels seem to tell a great story, and mix in people who are believable and relevant to the story line. I enjoy the time I've spent reading them.

A Book About Creating Lasting Change

I was certified as a Strategic Interventionist a year and half ago. With Anthony Robbins and Cloe Madanes and Mark and Magali Peysha guiding the studies and coaching, the amount of powerful strategies offered was life changing for me and my clients.

This book is a gift, sharing some of the best strategies for eliciting human change you will find. For example, let me share just one, the ‘elevation strategy’. The idea is if you help others, you will in turn be helped.

Mark shared a powerful story during the training about a lonely woman who would not give up junk food, specifically cookies. The coach told her she could eat three cookies a day. If she had more than that she would have to bake a few dozen cookies and hand deliver them to a local shelter. After several days of failing to stop at three cookies, she found herself making several trips to the shelter with freshly baked cookies. After a few weeks the women at the shelter looked forward to the cookies, and this woman looked forward to baking and delivering them. This powerful strategy accomplished several things; first it led this woman to help people in need. Next, it led her to make new friends which eliminated her loneliness and in the end gave her a purpose outside of herself.

Her Achilles heel became an avenue to build relationships, serve others, make new friends, and in the end eliminate her desire to eat cookies which were simply an addiction covering up her pain of being alone.

This is the power of Strategic Intervention. It is an elegant way to help others push though barriers and find the breakthrough to the next level. Some coaches may have tried to uncover ‘why ‘she ate the cookies, Strategic Intervention is based on knowing the Six Human Needs people are meeting at some level at all times. It wasn’t the ‘why’ that was most needed, it was about taking action, the heart of Strategic Intervention and this book. Once this woman took action, the other pieces all fell into place.

The same will be true for you and your clients. Get a notebook to jot down what you learn, because as you read this gem you won’t just have this one strategy, but another 50 you can use to bring about positive and lasting change.

This book is a must read for every life coach, relationship coach, career coach and for everyone in the helping professions. The parent, the teacher, everyone who wants to improve their life will find invaluable lessons. The book is easy to read, clear, entertaining and full of humor. Enjoy!
