Once is not enough

Read this when it was first published and adored it. At the time I was asked how I could like a lesbian book and was asked if I was secretly gay. REALLY. I don't know what made me think of it again but as a 65y/o I believe I got ever more from it this time. I loved molly then and now. I wished then and I was more like her and now happy that I have more of molly in me. Still not gay but still a lover of fabulous women. Fiction or non fiction. Thank you Rita Mae for Molly and Dolly. Can't wait to start six of one, bingo and loose lips.

A Book Chockfull of Fun, Fearlessness, and Strength

The first time I read Rubyfruit Jungle, I was about 12 and because my mother had signed the permission slip at the NY Public Library I was able to gain access to the Young Adult and Adult sections. This was the first book I'd ever read that had a main character who was a lesbian. The notion just blew my mind! Rita Mae Brown (the author) took me on a wild ride with her character Molly as she grows up the bastard (or rather adopted) daughter of a poor country family. One of the things I love most about Molly is how sure she is of herself. She's strong willed as a child--the struggles between her and her mother are really exciting and tense, willing and open to explore her sexuality as a teenager, and straightforward and no holds barred as a young woman, Molly only gets better as she gets older.

Reading this back in the early 90's was definitely an experience because back then lesbian literature was few and far between. Rubyfruit Jungle held so many secrets of what it was like to be female and gay. I can remember hiding this book for fear that my mother would find it and think I was a lesbian too. But sadly as an adult, the allure was gone. Maybe it's because I'm a jaded New Yorker where being gay isn't a stigma and Molly's experience has been sort of deflated by all the other writing that followed it.

For me, a book like this must be read when you really don't have a clear understanding of the world you live in. The reader has to be naive to put it plainly. As I think this book is meant to be an eye-opener for those who only know one side of the coin. Reading it as a young girl definitely had my heart pounding, made me blush and laugh out loud and want to share it with the world. Reading it as an adult was still an experience, and while it didn't move me as much, it did give make me reminisce about the young girl I was and how my innocence played such an important role in how I responded to literature. What I wouldn't give to be young again!

A Real Pleasure

Definitely radical when it was first published. The book was recommended, and it was kind of what I expected. It took real bravery to write this type of book, and Molly is an incredible character. She is a little adult, completely herself, absolutely fearless, and I think it's amazing. She does the impossible because of her indomitable spirit. Her father, Carl, truly loves her, and encourages her, despite her mother's fear and ignorance. Molly will not be defeated, regardless of being challenged at a nativity play, or confronted by a principal, or the dean of women. She soars - breezing through high school, thriving in college despite her lackadaisical roommate, forcing her way through New York. I like the end. It's not her mother, Carrie's revelation, so much as Molly's recognition of what Carrie went through that is most poignant, and despite all that toughness and meanness, Carrie loves Molly. I like this book, and though Molly is admirable, I didn't always like her. Still, it was a pleasure to read.

By the time of his death in 1405, the Mongol conqueror Tamerlane-a pejorative derivative of the nickname "Temur the Lame"-commanded as much land and fear as any ruler in history. Literally following in the footsteps of Ghengis Khan, he built his empire with one invasion after the next, eventually amassing a kingdom that stretched "from Moscow to the Mediterranean, from Delhi to Damascus." Nonetheless, Tamerlane remains relatively unknown in the Western world, taking a historical backseat to Ghengis despite a reign and ruthlessness every bit as remarkable. Faced with such a complex and underreported subject, Marozzi delivers an exceptional account of the emperor's life, revealing him to be both an extravagantly merciless tyrant and tireless proponent for the cultural and architectural progress in his beloved Samarkand (in modern day Uzbekistan). One peculiar choice, however, is the book's subtitle, as Tamerlane killed tens of thousands of his fellow Muslims along his so-called "pilgrimage of destruction," including a particularly bloody massacre of Baghdad that left 90,000 dead, "their heads cemented into 120 towers." This revisionist history traces the rise of the fourteenth-century warlord Temur -- known in the West as Tamerlane -- from a crippled peasant boy wandering the steppe to ruler of half the known world. Marozzi asserts that while Temur, like Genghis Kahn, specialized in razing cities and slaughtering their inhabitants, he also had the wisdom to rebuild, and Islamic art and architecture flourished on his watch. Marozzi quotes widely from contemporaneous accounts, relishing the fantastical detail. In India, for example, Temur countered the armored elephants of Delhi with "roaring camels on fire," then had the defeated beasts brought before him and forced to kneel. Along the way, Marozzi makes a pilgrimage through Temur's former empire, and argues that the Soviets outdid the warlord in destruction by turning the once fertile basin of Central Asia into a dust bowl.

A nomadic mass of destruction, Tamerlane (1336-1405) was just sedentary enough to leave behind, in addition to his signature monuments of piled skulls, the great Islamic architecture of Samarkand. Marozzi is an up-and-coming journalist-travel writer ( South from Barbary: Along the Slave Routes of Libyan Sahara, 2001) who melds the biography with visits to sites of Tamerlane's battles, atrocities, and buildings. Richly describing central Asia's steppe and desert, Marozzi recounts Tamerlane's initial claim on his due portion of Genghis Khan's empire. Following the warlord's widening conquests, Marozzi sorts through the panegyrics and condemnations of chroniclers of the time, whose dominantly opprobrious opinion of Tamerlane descends for the West via Christopher Marlowe's famous drama Tamburlaine (1587) and periodic studies. The previous popular biography (Tamburlaine the Conqueror, by Hilda Hookham, 1962) is out of print, and Uzbekistan has adopted Tamerlane as its national hero, which further recommends Marozzi's fine performance of evoking the past and present of one of history's most lurid empire builders. Solid Writing, Great History

Just finished Marozzi's book. I can see why some people grew annoyed...its not arranged like a typical history title. But I liked it for that reason. Marozzi's writing is solid too, and the book breezed by. When I finished I was actually a little sad!

Marozzi definitely seemed to be in awe of Tamerlane, and his enthusiasm in turn made me excited for each new chapter. While most of Tamerlane's historic career was quite bloody and brutal, I couldn't help but be enthralled by it. I also couldn't help but be fascinated by Tamerlane's cultural combination of Muslim and Mongol traditions...really interesting reading.

If you like your history on the straight and narrow with little or no author commentary, then you won't like this book. But if you're willing to go off the beaten path a little and read some personal travel musings sprinkled in with the main story, you will enjoy Marozzi's efforts here.

Heady reading

It might be inappropriate to say I >enjoyed< a book about a protagonist who decorated the scenes of his victories with pyramids of skulls. However, the book is absorbing. The author writes well, with skill, knowledge, and at times quiet humor. His comments on conditions in Temur's lands today were very interesting, connecting the past to the present.

I probably had better than average knowledge of Temur, knew about his coffin lid, and so forth, but my knowledge was, at best sketchy. Didn't Handel have a hand in writing an opera about him? I had never figured out what Mongols were doing ruling India. This book filled in vivid details about this fascinating, but almost forgotten, page of history.

Fortunately, my decision to buy the book was not influenced by the reviewer who complains about Marozzi's use of Marlowe's play. Actually, the play figures very briefly in the book. It provides an intriguing contrast of the perception or dramatization of Temur and the historical facts. For that matter, I wish he had commented on Handel's opera, too.

Readers are sure to ... well, I shouldn't say enjoy it, but you will want to read this book.

Marozzi keeps using phrases such as gold and precious stones, and uses repetitive dramatic language to describe every battle. The book is interesting in spite of the unsophisticated writing.

About the Author

S.V. Kulkarni is a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. Previously, he worked at Crompton Greaves Limited and specialized in the design and development of transformers up to 400 kV class. He received the Young Engineer Award from the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) for his contributions to electromagnetic field computations and high voltage insulation design in transformers. Professor Kulkarni has organized a number of training courses on the topics of transformers and computational electromagnetics for industry and academia in India. He has also delivered tutorials and keynote lectures in international conferences/workshops on transformers. He is a senior member of the IEEE. He is also a Fellow of INAE and an editor of IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery.

S.A. Khaparde is a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. He received his Ph.D. in 1981 from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. He is a member of the advisory committee to the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC), India and the Indian Energy Exchange. Professor Khaparde is a senior member of the IEEE and editor of the International Journal of Emerging Electrical Power Systems. He is also a consultant to MERC, the Indian Energy Exchange, and Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd, etc. He is a BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) LITD-10 Committee Member and Chair of the Working Group on Common Information Model (CIM). He is member of IEC TC57 for working groups 13 and 16 representing India.

I was like awww man this is only a novella but once I started reading OMG what a novella it is!!!
It's hot,it's sexy and boy oh boy do these two have major chemistry, my cheeks were a bright shade of red in a few scenes, I absolutely loved it! I won't give away any spoilers but THIS is how a novella is meant to be written! Start, middle and ending were perfect and it was wrapped up fabulously! Congratulations Lauren Blakely, Pretending he's Mine is my top novella so far for 2013!!

Review: Pretending He's Mine by Lauren Blakely

This was definitely a fun, cute read. It was just what I needed after reading a pretty heavy dark fantasy book. :) There wasn't a whole lot of depth to this story, but it was such an enjoyable read. Sutton calls upon Reeve to pretend to be her fiancee so she can land the job opportunity of a lifetime. In exchange, Reeve will also get the shot at one of the biggest leading male acting roles in the business.

I really liked Sutton and Reeve. Blakely did a great job of creating fun, flirty characters who quickly started blurring the lines of what was pretend and what was real. I think that was my favorite part of reading this book! Watching Sutton and Reeve struggle between deciding whether or not the other was truly acting a role was too much fun.

I personally think Reeve was a little more open that Sutton was. Sutton ran hot and cold, which drove Reeve crazy. One minute he'd think she actually wanted him and felt something more and the next he was confused by her withdrawn, hard nature. Watching him call her out on it in the wine cellar- ooh la la la! :)

Overall, if you're in the mood for a quick, light, enjoyable read- this book is a good choice!

Oh Reeve...You Rock My World!

Lauren Blakely's novella follow-up to Caught Up In Us is a 5 Star wonder. I love novellas and wished more authors wrote them. They are the perfect size to squeeze into a lazy morning or for a few hours when you can't sleep at night. At any rate, this was a great love story. I liked it because the relationship starts off the way I think most do...with intense attraction (or in this case, lust). Major like, and then love, develops later. This story follows the lust part of the relationship and it is H-O-T. You will never go to a theater production or library again without thinking about Reeve and Sutton.

I completely loved Reeve. Sutton I didn't quite warm up to but in hindsight, I think it's because her character was true to her heritage. She was British and a film industry higher up. She was supposed to be cool and untouchable. That didn't last long the more she got to know Reeve.

Great read...get it now!!!
