About the Author
Robert L. Smith, P.E., is an Emeritus Professor of Architecture at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He worked in electrical construction for more than 20 years. He taught electrical apprentice classes for the IBEW and industrial electricity at Parkland Community College and Environmental Technology for the School of Architecture. Mr. Smith has frequently lectured on the application of the National Electrical Code . He was an active member of the Illumination Engineering Society, of the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers, and of the International Association of Electrical Inspectors.

Stephen L. Herman--both an electrician and a teacher for more than 30 years--authored numerous popular textbooks on the subjects of electricity and mathematics. Now retired, Mr. Herman spent two decades as lead instructor for the Electrical Technology Curriculum at Lee College in Baytown, Texas, where he received an Excellence in Education Award from the Halliburton Education Foundation. He also taught at Randolph Community College in Asheboro, North Carolina, for nine years, and helped establish an electrical curriculum for Northeast Texas Community College in Mount Pleasant, Texas. About the Author
Rafael López-Pedraza was born in Cuba in 1920 of Spanish heritage. He lived in Zurich from 1963 until 1974 and attended the C. G. Jung Institute. Today he lives in Caracas, Venezuela, where he divides his time between professorial duties, a psychotherapeutic practice, and writing.

Beyond Jung

Jung did leave us 40 years ago. He spent his life creating whole new concepts, one after the other. It will take decades to develop some of the theories that he postulated first, some still like rough diamonds that will need lots of polishing. This is an example of the work that needs to be done. The exploration of our dark side is one of those goals that we must achieve and the view expressed in this book is fascinating and worthwhile absorbing into our thought process. The only problem is that it is a rather hard read, not for the novice or quick self-help book seeker.

Rafael Lopez Pedraza was a one of a kind Cuban born psychologist and psychotherapist whose genius and ponderous charisma -- think Mussorgsky's 'Pictures at an Exhibition' --, inspired, upon a single encounter, the poet Robert Creeley to dedicate a poem to him, altered the course of the writings of Thomas Moore, and deeply influenced both James Hillman and Patricia Berry. Steeped in Classical Scholarship, Western Culture, especially Spanish art and literature, and the depth psychology of C.G. Jung, in this magnificent book Lopez brings to the Greek myths of Hermes a vivid, almost uncanny interpretive mastery so that these myths live in their fullness once again as they did for the great Renaissance artists, not as entertainment, but as spur and means to a deeper imagination and realization of the human condition -- the darkness, the grotesque and the humor, as well as the light. Lopez' style of interpretation has been likened to that of a matador, a dancer, a jazz man -- full of grace, improvisation, surprise, daring, elegance, quick and sudden moves that bring a startling freshness and dazzling illumination to his subject. The famous music and cultural critic Albert Murray once wrote 'that the difference between riffing and shucking is knowing the fundamentals'. Rafael Lopez Pedraza is all riff. A must read for post jungians

Rafael Lopez Pedraza is one of my favourite psychotherapists. After reading this book, he goes beyond Jung. He and Hillman have taken Jungs theories and ran with them. The use of Duende took me down another path and has made me interested in Lorca and flamenco which I wouldn't have read up on. Pedraza definitely has Duende. Too bad there aren't a lot of therapists who took his path.

Engagement- the downfall of corporate America- is flow

In this book, readers will find the first well-researched proof that engaging with life is within anyone's control and that it is not more easily attained when the task is easy or leisurely. In cross-cultural studies, Csikszentmihalyi and contributors demonstrate that anyone can access the 'flow' state.

Early in his work and writings, this particular book provides descriptions of the optimal experience state that was named 'flow' in later works. The point, in my mind's eye, is that anyone can get there and that external rewards or the quality of the experience are not the critical factors for whether we engage- nor is some innate talent or socioeconomic level.

Csikszentmihalyi's work was the basis of my own work while teaching at Dartmouth Med School and, then, for the work I have done consulting to peak performers on the competitive fields of sports and business, politics, medicine, and law. It is also the basis for The Winner's Way (McGraw-Hill 2004) The Winner's Way : A proven method for achieving your personal best in any situation in which I outline how peak performers in sport get into the zone and how anyone can use three elements within their control to engage with the power of heart, brain - and energy to get it done and to achieve your goals.

Given that this was the start of work on 'flow'- Gallup and Towers and Perrin call it 'engagement', the book stands on its own as a solid 5-star read.

Leaves A Lot Unsaid ....

I looked at the sample which claimed this book did not require any knowledge of C# or VB. I was looking for a resource to show me how to connect, and use, SQL databases with C# and Visual Studio 2010. I have plenty of experience in xBase languages, but need to make this transition. Since the book was just published, I figured this was a good choice.

Sadly, it seems like the author sat at the computer and dictated a text of what he was doing, and then said "copy this". Well, that includes his own directories, called resources that are likely not on your computer, and then a lot of code without any explanation of its purpose, or definition of its use. Example: He says "If you don't have the Northwind database you can download it from the Microsoft web site." Actually, its not that easy ! Also, he doesn't state that you want an Access install of this database. He then goes on to list a lot of code to type in, with no explanation of what you are actually doing.

This may be quite good for someone who is totally articulate in .NET and all of the Windows programming options, but for someone who is not, its just a smoke filled room that is hard to navigate and understand.

I'll come back to it after I work through other materials and hopefully it will make better sense then. For now, its just going to sit on my virtual bookshelf.

Perfect Timing

I was having trouble getting database access working in C# and this book was exactly what I needed. I downloaded it to my iPad and today has turned out to be a very productive day. The examples are clear and easy to follow so I was able to overcome my hurdles and make up some lost time on my project. I didn't have to skim through lots of blah, blah, blah on the history of VBA or any other dribble. It was too the point and exactly what I need to get the job done. Thank you Michael Schmalz and O'Reilly.

I would look elsewhere for instruction

I learned a few things from this book but even when following the script samples, I experienced issues compiling. Beyond the code samples, there seemed to be very little substance to this book.

Clueless in Brooklyn

I came to Emily Gould through her essay "Into the Woods" in MFA vs NYC: The Two Cultures of American Fiction. "Into the Woods" wasn't the best essay in the book - that would be Dianna Wagman's "Application" -- but still I read it three or four times. I found it utterly compelling for the author's utter cluelessness. I'm decades older than Ms. Gould's demographic and I'm sure her platform, such as it is, doesn't account for readers like me. It seems Ms. Gould has become a social lightning rod, albeit in a small sphere, that being Brooklyn hipsters/MFA culture. But lately that small sphere has an outsize cultural influence, often determining what novels get published by New York's major houses. That said, I looked forward to reading Friendship when finally it was published. It's about what I expected. And please note that one of my three stars goes to the Brooklyn-Manhattan setting. Take these characters out of that milieu and it's like sticking a pin in a balloon. If I had to use one word to describe Friendship it would be wishy-washy. The two main characters, Bev and Amy, are wishy-washy in extremis. And the third-person narrative is equally wishy-washy. Every emotion in this novel is always sorta or like or maybe, never full-on whatever. True to Ms. Gould's professed feminist-socialist education, her characters don't dare be judgmental, except, of course, when it comes to so-called privileged white males (which is why she gets so much play on Salon.com and Huffington Post). Even the title is wishy-washy. Advertising the novel as an exploration of friendship - specifically, Bev and Amy, two would-be writers in Brooklyn - is a thinly veiled cover for a thin story. Not much happens in Friendship and the crises, such as Bev's pregnancy resulting from a drunken one-nighter with a loathsome co-worker, seem contrived to give the novel a semblance of plot. Ms. Gould's writing is hardly awesome. More often than not her prose is clunky. There's an overabundance of adjectives and adverbs. The author repeatedly strings three or four pedestrian adjectives together when just the right one would nail it. How could an editor let an abomination like "infinite eternity" get by her without red-pencilling it? There's also an overabundance of adolescent weenie words like, um, "like" and "really" and "totally." Everyone in the novel talks like that, and bad as that is it's worse in the third-person narrative. At times, the novel itself feels adolescent, YA-ish, if you will. Bev and Amy constantly addressing each other as "dude" doesn't help. They read like two particularly immature YA characters out of their depth in the grown-up world. The scene where Bev and Amy declare themselves best friends seems more suited to girls in eighth grade than women pushing thirty. Ms. Gould does have an eye for telling detail. But her epiphanies seem more like defensive responses to her critics than insights born of painful introspection. The author will have to write a far better novel than Friendship if she's ever going to transcend being Emily Gould. Yet she's made her mark. There's no denying her influence. A few years ago, I participated in a roundtable discussion with six literary agents from Brooklyn and Manhattan, five young women and one young man, and each was a variation of Emily Gould. How did these privileged kids with their MFA's and politically correct feminist-socialist educations get to be the gatekeepers of American fiction? Still, despite myself, I enjoyed reading Friendship (half the fun, of course, was editing and critiquing as I read). If anyone out there wants to read a terrific 5-star novel about authentic Brooklynites I'd suggest Rizzo's Daughter, by Lou Manfredo. There isn't a Pulitzer winner in the past ten years that can touch Mr. Manfredo for everything that great novelists do.

Middling chick-lit from a capable writer

Ms Gould has more chops than are suggested by this novel. I don't say this from having read her stuff elsewhere. It's just a hunch. I think that this tale is hampered by the usual characteristics of the genre: some snappy bits, some mild insights, lots of observational sections...but pretty much lacking story, or for that matter, depth. When I say that about story, what I'm referring to is the fact that the novel is a long 'situation' with various characters, various facets.

The book did not move me. The story was not compelling. I appreciated the facility with which it was written...but it's not something I'd recommend to anyone.

Here's to Ms Gould digging deeper to mine a more 'literary' vein of storytelling.

Didn't Meet It's Potential

I was very unimpressed with this book. I felt as though it had no plot and what little plot it did have was not even wrapped up at the end. I kept reading, thinking something would happen that would hold my interest, but nothing did.

That being said, the writing was fine and I enjoyed how she presented the characters. I just felt as though the book could have been so much better.
