During this period of territorial expansion, the Romans developed the basic legal forms by which they governed captured land, and they constructed the processes and ceremonies by which those forms were translated into practice. Using agrarian law as a case study and focusing especially on rituals that both validated and gave structure to the administrative process, Gargola demonstrates the fundamental connections between religion, law, and government. Essential acts in the administration of agrarian legislation, such as the transfer of land from one party to another and the granting of contracts for public works, depended upon ritual formulas and gestures, often within the context of religious ceremonies. By recovering these formulas and their larger significance, Gargola reconstructs an important dimension of Roman life.

Encouraging and realistic optimism for the future of the earth

As someone who regularly reads articles about the many ways the health of the earth has been getting worse and worse, I found far more reasons to be hopeful than I expected in this book.

For starters, the author gives several dozen examples of animals that have been brought back from, as he puts it, "the precipice of extinction."

And the chapter about the dramatic decrease in the cost of photo voltaics and the exponential increase in the use of solar energy is very encouraging, as are the chapters about no waste product design and zero energy use buildings.

Boyd describes how countries all around the world came together 30 years ago to address the very serious ozone depletion problem (and they had to deal with deniers and those who predicted that economies would be destroyed by the costs of dealing with it). He goes on to make it clear he believes that we can also come together to solve the problems of climate change and biodiversity loss.

Given the major environmental problems our planet and those of us who live on it face, I highly recommend this book. In fact, I think everyone should read it.

a shot of hope

When you're climbing a mountain, and the distance before you seems overwhelming, it's helpful to look back at how far you've come already. This book serves as a reminder that environmental activists have accomplished the seemingly impossible before, so it's possible to do it again. Progress is being made in other corners of the earth, even if it's not visible to you. Boyd manages to give the activist in us all a shot of adrenaline and hope without making the current problems seem any less daunting.

My impression of the book is mostly positive, but there are a few downsides. I think that the first chapter on animal species that have recovered is perhaps the most simplistic and his weakest, so it's unfortunate that it came first. He definitely has a point, but doesn't include the whole picture for the species he focuses on. His research just felt less thorough on that topic than on the others. But once he got going, it was informative. It was also a smooth read.

The autobiographical parts of the book were a little awkward -- I guess I didn't really read it to find out what the author ate or how long he went before buying a car. As I read, I was trying to figure out why those sections are in there at all, and I concluded that making it personal might help us to feel empowered to do something in our own lives, but I don't think it really worked. An account of how powerful letters to politicians are or how organizations can be most effective might have been more helpful. But these sections, although awkward, did not ruin the book for me at all. I learned a lot, updating my knowledge of good stuff going on in the world. And that was the whole point.

The storytelling is, well, storytelling. It is anecdotal. And that's okay. It's very readable and will be informative for a wide variety of readers. Most readers don't want to read charts of data -- they want to know what the takeaway is, what the story is. I'd recommend it for anyone concerned about the environment who values success stories as a way of preparing for the battles ahead.

“Yes, the world faces substantial environmental challenges—climate change, pollution, [species] extinction. But the surprisingly good news is that a remarkable number of environmental problems have been solved, while substantial progress is ongoing on others.

[This book] chronicles these remarkable success stories and suggests a bright green future is not only possible, it’s within our grasp.”

The above comes from this extremely positive book by David Boyd. Boyd is an environmental lawyer, professor, and award-winning author.

Before reading this book, I read some of the endorsements for it. Endorsing it were people like Jane Goodall (primatologist, anthropologist, U.N. Messenger of Peace), David Suzuki (geneticist, professor, science broadcaster, environmentalist), and Elizabeth May (Canada’s first Green Party Member of Parliament, lawyer, author, environmentalist). I said to myself, “This book must be good.”

I was not disappointed. This book was not only good, it was fantastic.

This book does EXACTLY what it says it’s going to do. It provides kind of an antidote to the plague of ecological negativity we’re bombarded with by giving readers a sense of optimism that a greener, cleaner, healthier, and happy future IS possible.

This hopeful attitude isn’t based on cherry-picking some heart-warming, kumbaya anecdotes but is based on a sober and balanced examination of the FACTS about humanity’s past environmental successes (there’s an excellent chapter on how humanity saved the ozone layer), current trends (such as people demanding and using electric transport), and future possibilities (such as the future of buildings).

To be totally honest, the extent of the good news regarding progress to solving our environmental problems astonished me.

And what is the optimistic environmentalist’s message to the world? Answer: we can do better. The solutions to all our environmental problems are available NOW, and implementing then will make us wealthier not poorer. All over the world, this vision is becoming a reality.

Finally, the only problem I had was that this book had no index. This is truly a pity. A wealth of important information on a critical issue is presented but there is no easy access it.

In conclusion, David Boyd has given us all a great gift: a book to lift our spirits. We must all become optimistic environmentalists because, after all is said and done, the Earth is a beautiful place to call home.

This volume is a direct result of the International Symposium on Japanese Sentence Processing held at Duke University. The symposium provided the first opportunity for researchers in three disciplinary areas from both Japan and the United States to participate in a conference where they could discuss issues concerning Japanese syntactic processing. The goals of the symposium were three-fold:

* to illuminate the mechanisms of Japanese sentence processing from the viewpoints of linguistics, psycholinguistics and computer science;

* to synthesize findings about the mechanisms of Japanese sentence processing by researchers in these three fields in Japan and the United States;

* to lay foundations for future interdisciplinary research in Japanese sentence processing, as well as international collaborations between researchers in Japan and the United States.

The chapters in this volume have been written from the points of view of three different disciplines, with various immediate objectives -- from building usable speech understanding systems to investigating the nature of competence grammars for natural languages. All of the papers share the long term goal of understanding the nature of human language processing mechanisms. The book is concerned with two central issues -- the universality of language processing mechanisms, and the nature of the relation between the components of linguistic knowledge and language processing. This volume demonstrates that interdisciplinary research can be fruitful, and provides groundwork for further research in Japanese sentence processing.

Made for a commercial business

Francisco Migoya has done it again, a wonderful book on a variety of pastries, entremets(cakes), savories, and more. It is divided into sections of business such as the pastry shop, bakery, etc. Mainly made for commercial use with servings of 6 cakes to 20 individual portions and special supplies. There are some mistakes in the components of some recipes such as 12 cake layers instead of 2 but if you read through the recipe first you'll be prepared. Overall it is nice but geared toward larger sizes and specialized machines so it might not be suited for the avid home baker but a good book.

Excellent tips for new cafe owners

As a graduate of the CIA's baking and pastry program at Greystone, I've chosen to go the entrepreneurial route toward business ownership rather than working my way up in the pastry field. This book provides relevant, practical information that will help readers run their kitchens and cafe businesses. It includes such tips as what products you can freeze (and for how long) without compromising quality, the best ways to position items in your display cases, how to handle to-go requirements properly, and much more. Yes, as other reviewers have mentioned, the content includes some special equipment and ingredients that many of us will not purchase for our kitchens, and some of the recipes will not suit everyone's setting. Still, the components and ideas presented provide a palette (pun intended!) to use as each reader sees fit, and that is a gold mine. As I am currently in the process of purchasing a small neighborhood cafe/bakery, this book is both inspirational and practical and was released at the perfect time.

Fascinating textbook on how to design and prepare food offerings at your Cafe.

As a person who has been cooking for about 2 years and become even more fascinated with food, this textbook on the food aspects of running your own Café is like a trip through wonderland. Not that I am ever going to have my own eatery. However, I found it fascinating to see what a person putting together a Café as a business has to plan for and consider.

Just as an example, in the introduction the author points out that your Café has to have at least three and probably more from the following categories of items on offer: breakfast items, artisan breads, pastries, savory items, confects and chocolates, packed shelf-stable foods, ice cream and other frozen desserts, and beverages.

The book spends most of its time presenting recipes for items and dishes that you might want to sell but more likely use in creating your own offerings. The recipes are for the larger quantities a professional Café would want to prepare rather than for us home cooks. And we can't just simply divide. You have to carefully adapt them and it will likely require experimentation. Plus, there is equipment required most of us do not have. The recipes are all designed for professional preparation and being ready to finish and serve in a few minutes when the item is ordered. Interesting techniques for us home cooks. However, how many homes have thermocirculators?

Not to fear, the author lists resources for foods and equipment you will require for certain recipes in the back of the book. That being said, outfitting your Café with large pieces of equipment such as stoves, broilers, ovens, mixers, freezer, refrigerators and the like must be covered in another book and another course. It is not covered here.

Since this is a textbook, the author presents the recipe instructions in great detail and with great specificity. You will learn by making these recipes. The photographs that accompany the recipes are fabulous and even awe inspiring. Some make me want to try and make those things and others leave me too daunted to try.

I love the pages with the brown boxes that present information you will need to consider and choices you will have to make when setting up your Café and deciding which items to prepare and serve.

Fascinating stuff.

About the Author
Kattamuri S. Sarma, PhD, is an economist and statistician with 30 years of experience in American business, including stints with IBM and AT&T. He is the founder and president of Ecostat Research Corp., a consulting firm specializing in predictive modeling and forecasting. Over the years, Dr. Sarma has developed predictive models for the banking, insurance, telecommunication, and technology industries. He has been a SAS user since 1992, and he has extensive experience with multivariate statistical methods, econometrics, decision trees, and data mining with neural networks. The author of numerous professional papers and publications, Dr. Sarma is a SAS Certified Professional and a SAS Alliance Partner. He received his bachelor's degree in mathematics and his master's degree in economic statistics from universities in India. Dr. Sarma received his PhD in economics from the University of Pennsylvania, where he worked under the supervision of Nobel Laureate Lawrence R. Klein.

Alright book

Arrived in mostly good condition. There was some slight wear around the edges, but nothing serious.

The book itself is decent. I'm learning to use SAS in grad school and this was one of the required texts. Not the best book I've had, but definitely not the worst.

An excellent resource for learning SAS Enterprise Miner and a great reference

I have read a number of books SAS Enterprise Miner book but this book easily tops them all. It is extremely well organized and thorough. Each section (sub section and even sub-sub section) has detailed 'how to' instructions so that the reader can practice with downloaded datasets. The author does a great job explaining the ideas behind the software and its capabilities. He also does a fabulous job explaining the math and theory behind techniques.

The book is what I expected, well written not only the mathematical background but also the step by step of doing on SAS Enterprise Miner. This was my eighth book about SAS and I really liked it. The only part I didn't like was in some pages the printed is not good. I really recommend this book!
