The project team has developed a work programme aiming to improve the current design and operation practices of membrane systems used for water desalination, trying to solve or, at least, to decrease the critical issues of sea and brackish water desalination systems. In the book, the main results achieved in the nine Work Packages constituting the project will be described, and dismissed by the leaders of the various WPs. The following areas are explored in the book: * the development of advanced analytical methods for feed water characterization, appropriate fouling indicators and prediction tools, procedures and protocols at full-scale desalination facilities; * the identification of optimal seawater pre-treatment strategies by designing advanced hybrid membrane processes (submerged hollow fibre filtration/reaction, adsorption/ion exchange/ozonation) and comparison with conventional methods; * the optimisation of RO membrane module configuration, cleaning strategies, reduction of scaling potential by NF; * the development of strategies aiming to approach the concept of Zero Liquid Discharge (increasing the water recovery factor up to 95% by using Membrane Distillation - MD; bringing concentrates to solids by Membrane Crystallization or Wind Intensified Enhanced Evaporation) and to reduce the brine disposal environmental impact and cost; * increase the sustainability of desalination process by reducing energy consumption(evaluation of MD, demonstration of a new energy recovery device for SWRO installations)and u se of renewable energy (wind and solar).

A Popular Textbook

This is a rather popular textbook because it clearly explains the Government and Binding Theory, though Chomsky prefers to call it the Theory of Principles and Parameters. There are quite a number of trees drawn for students to have a better understanding of the concerning structure, which usually lacks in other similar textbooks. This is particularly welcome by beginners since the analysis with squared brackets often makes new hands feel confused and even lost. It is also part of the reason why the book is so thick. The exercises are helpful for students to review what they have learned and to find out what concepts are not fully understood. This is the 2nd edition, which usually means it has a good readership. In fact, it is true.

Introduction to GB theory.

This is a very clear and at the same time thorough introduction to GB. Each chapter discusses a module or concept of the theory, like phrase structure, case theory, logical form, etc. By means of data from mainly English each part of the theory is developed and explained at an easy to follow pace. At the end of a chapter you will have a good basic knowledge of the topic, and at the end of the book you will be ready to read the primary literature.

At the same time that this book introduces you to GB theory, it also teaches you how "to do" linguistics. By means of example data preliminary principles about language are stated. Those principles are being made more precize as more data is introduced.

I find this book to be a very fascinating read. If you like linguistics and want to know about GB theory this book is a good choice.

great introduction to GB

A great into to GB. My undergraduate Introduction to Syntax class was based on a minimalist framework (using Adger's Core Syntax). But in my graduate syntax classes many of the papers we read were based assuming a GB framework, so this book proved invaluable for getting up to speed (and as a general reference).

Try to get the 3rd edition of the book. In that edition, the author removed some chapters on details of Romance languages and added an introduction to Chomsky's Minimalist Program which was coming out at the time of the 3rd edition .

Amazing art and storyline...

The artwork and the story is amazing, and I loved the whole Life with Archie series, except maybe the Midge/Jughead storyline, I'm sorry but that came completely out of left field. While, I'm not crazy about the death of Archie, I think the writers and artists, depicted how Archie would react in that situation quite well, besides its only arc in the Archie comics universe, I can deal. I'm not sure if I'll read the Afterlife with Archie because anything horror related/zombie like scares me…

I was disappointed in how this series ended. I kept hoping for Archie's life to settle down and for him to start a family, like what happened in the original "Archie Married Life" series. I feel like this series should have been marketed differently, instead of making it seem like it was going to be like an expanded version of the earlier book.

I consider the finish to this series to be a slap in the face. Nobody who's been following this story wanted to see Archie die; we all wanted to see him have a happy ending. To do this for the sake of a publicity stunt is deplorable. The abrupt ending even cheapens the storylines that were going on, such as Veronica's trial. And then there's the not so subtle politics the comic is pushing: Archie is killed by a "crazy right-winger." Just a disappointing ending to what had been a very good series.

Success in the Midst of Failure

I was given a copy of this book, and I started reading it immediately. Then canvassing happened, and I had to come back to it months later. Overall I found the book encouraging. It talks about finding success in the midst of failure, which we all need, because we all fail at times. Failure is very discouraging, and sometimes we may feel like not getting back up when we fall. However, Dr. Pipim points to the verse that says, "a righteous man may fall 7 times, yet he gets back up." Above all, Dr. Pipim points to the bible for encouragement, citing examples of biblical heroes that fell, yet still got back up and kept trying.

Dr. Pipim does talk about his personal failure, but not so much that it takes away from the main focus of the book. The book is ultimately not about the author's failure, but how one can move on from failure towards success. The author wrote this book to share his insights about going to God when we fall, because ultimately, He's the only one who can pick us up.

I think the only major problem with the book was all the Ellen White quotes. Not because I dislike Ellen White, but I feel like if I want to find quotes from her, I can go read one of her books. At times I could not tell when the quotes ended and where Dr. Pipim's thoughts began. I have not read any of his other books, so I do not know if this is his usual way of writing.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is thinking of purchasing it.

Must Read book if you want to succeed.

This is such a timely book from Dr. Pipim. I'm currently reading it and can hardly put it down! Just when I thought I had success all figured out, Dr. Pipim throws a curve ball--- adjusting the lenses through which I define success. He has the audacity to even paint a picture of success--- in the midst of failure! Yes in deed. Thank you for this wonderful work. I'm hoping many of my colleagues will read it too and find inspiration like I'm finding. Thank you sir.

so do not recommend buying this book

Dr. Pipi wrote this book as part of his justification for what he termed a "moral fall" While he publicly admitted to adultery after the victim in Botswana came forward, in fact the wounded party was a 20 year old girl who came to him for counselling. As a 50+year old preacher, Dr. Pipim lured her into his hotel room and, according to the victim, raped her twice.

We love this book and wish there were more like it

We love this book and wish there were more like it. It is perfect for my kids, ages 6 and 2. It is simple enough for my 6 year old to read with me, and illustrated beautifully which keeps everyone's attention. The story is sweet and magical. It is illustrated in an ink print/wood block fashion and is highly graphical. I just love it and would buy more like it if I could. It's great for an art lover like me to read to her kids. I also LOVE the binding. It is embossed beautifully and seems like it will last a long time. It didn't even come with a cover which I think is great because I always throw those out anyway (as the kids destroy it) and underneath the cover, the book is always so plain and nondescript. Books don't need covers! This one is special inside and out. The execution and design of this book is excellent and I look forward to purchasing more like it to read with my children. This is a fine example of what every childrens book should strive to be like.

A simple, yet endearing, story blended with gorgeous art and design? Yes, please!

It touches all of the senses. It has texture and depth and lyricism that engages your hands, eyes and ears. It is a book you can enjoy all by yourself; just getting lost in the illustrations. But is is also a book you will want to read out loud (to children and adults) sharing the art as you share the story.

So what can I say? If you love the blending of art, literature and design you will want to have The Fax and the Star on your shelf.

Stunning illustrations and memorable story! LOVED this one!

When the book arrived in my mailbox, I held it in awe. The cover is perfect. I love the navy blue background and the cute little fox at the bottom, it just begs to be read and a fine showcase on your bookshelf!

The story is worthy of the cover too. It’s about a sweet little fox that loves his star. The star lights the fox’s way until one day the star is gone and the poor little fox is scared and doesn’t know what to do.

At first the fox hides from the dark and is scared, but eventually he decides he can’t hide forever and he goes looking for his star. What he finds isn’t just his start, but millions of other stars as well. He learns to never give up.

It was a heart warming little story that would be perfect for a nighttime reading with your little ones. It’s a classic story that children and adults will enjoy. But what really makes this book is the illustrations!

The illustrations are so marvelous! I love the navy and orange as the primary colors. They work so well together and are classic and timeless. The cute little forrest scenes, the trees, the animals…..all so cute and each page is different, and you have to ‘follow’ the words on some pages.

The illustrations and the word following make it engaging for reader and child…..on some pages I had to hunt for the fox, I could just see the parent asking their child, ‘where is the fox?’ while they are reading. In my mind this is a book that begs for parent/child reading time.

Sure older kids could read this book all on their own but it’s the kind of book that I see a parent and child reading together as a bedtime story…..just my vision.

The quality of the book and the pages are wonderful. The pages are thick and the illustrations vibrant, it gives the feeling of a special, luxurious book.

I can’t say enough good things about the story, illustrations, and the book itself. It was a real treat to read. I am going to keep this one on a little shelf of honor until I do have a baby one day…..and I plan on going with a woodland nursery some day so this book would fit right in with my decor!

This would make a fun holiday gift for younger kids or new parents to be or even big kids like me that just love beautiful books and illustrations! This is the kind of book that you want to actually buy a physical copy of…sure ebooks are always nice and convenient but books like this can’t be done justice on a computer screen. You need to feel them in you hands to fully appreciate both their story and their illustrations. Do you self (or your loved one) a favor and buy them the hard copy!

I am so glad I got to read this one, it was a lovely story and all around treat for me!

**** 110 pages ****

If the book has snow on the cover, I'm probably going to read it. I don't ever get tired of these snowed in and trapped in close quarters together stories. Love the premise. But when one lead is pretty much a boring corpse for the opening 30% of a 110-page story... meh...

Basically, the star of the number one show on primetime wanders like a damn fool in the dangerously snowy mountains in the midst of a little getaway and an equally famous but reclusive writer takes her in. You know the rest.

I don't think these characters (or their relationship) were developed enough to justify a plausible attraction/love, and the build up and chemistry wasn't really here. The TV star isn't even particularly likable. Yes, I perked up with that first sex scene, but I can't praise much beyond that. The language was also just kinda Harlequin-pretentious painful (a whole lot of she was "dangerously beautiful and infinitely famous"). And seriously. "Her people" seemed like the damn mafia. Unless she's on Bates Motel or The Vampire Diaries... I say leave her in the damn blizzard. Who cares.

At least the dog wasn't exploited for cuteness.

Plot Turns, Odd Language, and Incessant Repetition - Oh My!

Ummm...I'm a little bit unsure on how to review this book. So I think I'll break it down into sections.

Section 1 - The Good
I actually enjoyed this novel in the beginning until about half-way through. The story was coming together nicely, the two main characters were well described and being given the proper time for effective development, and the brimming-under-the-surface attraction was palpable but not overwhelming. The struggles each character fought with were relatable, making it easy to follow and grow with the characters themselves as they delved deeper into their true feelings, both in themselves, as well as with others.

Section 2 - The Bad
Once the romance kicked in, my interest wavered and had difficulty keeping alive. I'm a big sucker for romance novels, especially of the lesbian persuasion, but this romance just didn't quite cut it. For one, the two characters were all of sudden in love. Like just one page after talking about dinner, suddenly the characters were all over each other, spewing out awkward phrases that I certainly don't use in the bedroom, and admitting to the other that they were the long lost love they had been searching for in the better part of a decade. I mean...I'm sorry, but shouldn't there be some sort of setup to romance? This wasn't meant to a bing, bang, done story - yet that's how it seemed to start out. Then suddenly, the next morning, each character was confessing their undying love to one another over tears and "I wish we could be together always"s. That and I felt that there was entirely too much repetition - in dialogue, in narrative, all around. There were also a few key phrases that I couldn't take seriously, such as "'This is what heaven looks like,' she said, sitting on her knees between Maggie's legs. 'So f***ing beautiful.'" I just...I don't even know.

Section 3 - The Verdict
I'm teetering between 2.5 stars and 2 stars. The 2.5 stars side of me is focusing on the first half of the novel, the part that I really enjoyed and didn't put down once (thank goodness for novella-length novels!). But the 2-star side of me just can't get passed the unbelievable plot turns, odd language at times, and the incessant repetition.

I've never read anything by Ronica Black before, but I've heard she is well liked among the LGBT population, and I will be sure to give her another try before deciding based on this one novel. I just wish this one kept the same pace in the beginning all the way to the end.

Sooo much potential wasted

I'd like to start by saying that I love a lot of Ronica Black books. In my opinion, she writes some of the greatest lesbian sex scenes out there. If you haven't read it already, pick up In Too Deep, as that's my favorite book she's written thus far. Now on to THIS book...

Snow Angel felt rushed on every level. The women go from nothing in common and barely speaking to each other, to declaring their undying love in 3 days time. There is constant talk about how Ellie is so controlled in her life and hates her life so much, but there isn't anything that really happens to back that up. Nothing was really fleshed out about these characters, so it felt much more like a story that belongs in a short story anthology.

I gave it three stars because I felt like this had so much more potential and still had these moment where you wanted the author to go more in depth, but in the end it just kept falling short. I just wish there was more of a build between the character...

Recommendation: Buy In Too Deep, not this one
