A little world with big problems

Seven stories of the "little world" of the Bassa (rural Emilia-Romagna) after the war, drawn from Don Camillo e il Suo Gregge:

1. La bicicletta - Don Camillo's bicycle is stolen, but he will reform the thief whether the latter likes it or not.

2. Gli spiriti - Peppone investigates a haunted house while at the same time don Camillo unearths a wartime scandal. The two inquiries intersect, with tragic, but inevitable results.

3. Abbondanza e Carestia (Feast and Famine) - "Carestia" is a bicycle racer, born for adventure. "Abbondanza" is a beautiful, but very dutiful seamstress. Somehow the two wed, but their life together is not fated to be smooth.

4. Legnate matrimoniali - A Romeo and Juliet story with perhaps a bit more realism than is comfortable. Paolina is the daughter of Rocchi, an old-school Catholic father - we're talking Inquisition-level "old school" here. Falchetto is the "brains" of the local Communist party. No, don Camillo doesn't give them poison to help them get together, but that might have been easier than the course they do adopt.

5. Fulmine detto Ful - Don Camillo finds the world's best hunting dog, which he then, reluctantly, returns to its owner. However, when the owner turns out to be a scoundrel of the first order, don Camillo and Peppone decide to teach him a lesson.

6. Vittoria proletaria - Stalin has died, a matter of grief for the Communists, but of joy to staunch Catholics like old lady Desolina. For Peppone, however, neither grief nor joy stands in the way of a good business proposition.

7. L'anello - When the war ends, the local podestà (Fascist mayor) must flee. The Biolchi family takes advantage of the situation, and moves into their abandoned villa. But there is one more thing that Gisa Biolchi really wants.

As the above summaries may indicate, the "little world" here is anything but innocent. Yes, Guareschi is a "comic" author, but in the course of these stories there are murders, suicide, child and animal abuse, unwanted pregnacies, riots, political strife, beatings - even a police shootout. Fortunately, don Camillo and Peppone, despite their conflicting ideologies, usually manage to apply some sort of rough justice to the situation.

In terms of difficulty, there is regular use of all the various verb forms and, given the older, semi-rural setting, a good amount of less-familiar vocabulary. But Guareschi's writing style is clear and straightforward, aside from the occasional wry observation. So I would rate this book solidly at the "B" level of the Easy Readers/Facili Letture.

poesia e umorismo

Spesso si legge un libro e quando si vede il film che ne è stato tratto si resta delusi. O al contrario si vede un bel film e viene voglia di leggere il libro da cui è tratto e si resta altrettanto delusi.
I film su Peppone e don Camillo sono famosissimi, sicuramente più del libro, e molto piacevoli Ma il libro non è affatto una delusione, anzi! E' pieno di poesia, di umorismo e di saggezza. E mette di buon umore. Penso che Guareschi come scrittore non abbia la fama che meriterebbe ed è un peccato.
Anche l'edizione è buona, c'è solo qualche pecca marginale (poche righe con parole tutte unite)e i disegni sono ben riprodotti. Vale decisamente la modesta spesa.

Chapter One
Ballykillmarrick, Ireland, 1913

As she’d done a thousand times in the past seven years, Celia lay back on the straw, enjoying the feel of Robert’s dark head resting on her stomach. She watched him leisurely twiddling a piece of straw between his teeth. Freddie and Patrick were on either side of her, their heads close to hers.

Yet somehow, this time, something was ... different. Her heart pumped harder than usual and her blood ran like liquid fire through her veins.

There seemed no better way to spend her nineteenth birthday than here in the abandoned barn of Robert’s family’s farm, staring up at the rafters, surrounded by her three best childhood friends.
Except that something was happening to her. The sensation of it was like falling. Only she was lying on her back.

She reached out and touched Robert’s dark hair. It was so soft under her fingertips.

“Mmm, Ceil, ye’ve an angel’s touch,” Robert murmured.

Celia’s breath caught softly. The feel of his hair under her fingertips resonated deep inside her, stirring deep vibrations between her thighs. She lifted her hand from Robert’s head as if he were on fire.

He seemed not to notice.

She glanced to either side of her. Patrick held his notebook, deep in the act of composing a new poem. All his poems were about her, she realized with a blinding flash. So blind she’d been all this time. His sandy brown hair invited her touch as well. She resisted.

And Freddie, to her other side, had just a few days ago described to her his ideal woman. She hadn’t registered what he was saying then, but the description of a slim willowy girl with pale freckled skin and waves of dark long hair had fit her to perfection.

None of the three lads, now in their twentieth years, seemed to be on the search for girlfriends, always content to be with her. Nor was she looking, either. She was never happier than she was with her three friends.

Friends! What were they then that they caused her to feel this way? These sensations ripped through her body, making her want each one of them in her arms, inside her, their lips against hers?

She felt suddenly surrounded, not by her playmates, but by grown men. The pulsing between her legs rose to a pitch and her breasts tingled, her nipples tightening. She suddenly wanted Robert to hold her and kiss her, to explore her with his hands and mouth. In fact, she wanted the same from Patrick and Freddie.

The Completeness of Celia Flynn

Celia Flynn had grown up with her three best friends Robert, Freddie, and Patrick. They were so different, and they had always been inseparable. Patrick was the poet always with a notebook to write when the inspiration hit him. Robert was so muscular and well defined working on the family farm. Freddie was her smart one. She loved them all. On her nineteenth birthday however, things changed. She wasn't feeling like they were just her friends anymore. Celia was having lusty thoughts about them, and she wasn't sure what to do about it. She couldn't understand how she could have feelings for them all, and thought it was wrong. They tried to reassure her that they were feeling the same thing, but she got frightened, and ran away. It wasn't long after that; Robert, Freddie, and Patrick marched off to war. Celia tried to act how good girls do, and tried dating someone respectable, but he didn't bring out the feelings that Celia had always had for her men. She missed each of them, and realized too late that she never should have rejected them.

When her family home was commissioned as a recovery center for soldiers, Celia had hopes they would return soon. She had written to each of them apologizing for her actions, and begging for forgiveness. She told them how much she loved them, and hoped they felt the same. Robert was one of the first patients, and while he did come back, he had a severe hip injury to recover from. They spent all free time together, and she went to him every night, so he could get acquainted with her body. Paddy was the next to return, but with more severe injuries than Celia could have imagined. Her Patrick was blind from exposure to mustard gas, but she didn't care because at least he was home. They finally heard news about Freddie. He wasn't physically injured but was suffering from posttraumatic stress. Celia had all three of her men back, and they were going to take care of each other if she could be strong.

This could have been such a good book, but the writing was lacking emotional depth in the characters, and it was too short to tell this type of complete story. The sex lacked any excitement, and was written poorly. Not a recommended read.

Expected More

When reading fiction, you have to be willing to suspend reality to a degree, but to what point? What mother would accept or even pretend to accept her daughter's wishes to carry on a polygamous relationship with three men in the early 1900s, a mother who, by all appearances, is a devout religious woman? The sex scenes are rather dull and contrived. I kept hoping for it to get interesting, sadly it did not. Where is the magic and touching tale that people spoke of when reviewing this book? I'm wondering if we all read the same book.

The Completeness of Celia Flynn

As a young woman, Celia has just realized that her three best friends Robert, Patrick and Freddie are starting to see her as more than just a friend. As the boys begin to explore Celia's young body, she's quickly reminded by her mother's words how wrong it is to be around her three best friends all the time. Celia begins to push them all away. She cuts herself off from her friends not wanting to be put in the position of having to choose. She loves them all.

As the boys go away to war, Celia realizes how wrong she was to push them away and now she must wait and hope for each one to return from the war. Celia will not let them go again.

The Completeness of Celia Flynn is a touching story. You can feel the love this young woman develops for her three friends. Your heartstrings will be pulled when Celia pushes them away as she listens to her mother's words and not to her heart. I found myself completely engrossed in The Completeness of Celia Flynn! Ms. Guillone weaves a magical tale as these four individuals make their way to back to each other. The sex is hot and the emotions run high. You'll really love The Completeness of Celia Flynn.

Dress Accessories (Medieval Finds from Excavations in London)

This is a great book for those who are seriously interested in the Middle Ages. Historians, living-history-adepts and re-enactors all can find what they are looking for. There is a lot of information, perhaps even too much for non-professionals (pages and pages on what was found where, with detailed descriptions). On the other hand, the drawings are just as detailed and this makes it a wonderful book just to browse and 'look at the pictures'. For a non-native speaker of English the language may be a bit difficult at times.

Not much for photos but the written detail is absolutely wonderful. Would also recommend buying the book to use the reference list which is quite extensive.
