About the Author
Maurice Sendak was born in Brooklyn, New York. He began by illustrating other authors' books for children, but the first book that he both wrote and illustrated was Kenny's Window, published in 1956. In his lifetime, he illustrated over 80 books, and received many awards, including the 1964 Caldecott Medal for Where the Wild Things Are. In 1970 he was the first American to win the Hans Christian Andersen Illustrator's Medal. He passed away in May 2012. Robert Graves was born in 1895 in Wimbledon, son of Alfred Perceval Graves, the Irish writer, and Amalia von Ranke. He went from school to the First World War, where he became a captain in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Apart from a year as Professor of English Literature at Cairo University in 1926 he earned his living by writing, mostly historical novels which include I CLAUDIUS and THE GOLDEN FLEECE. He wrote his autobiography, GOODBYE TO ALL THAT, in 1929. He translated Apuleius, Lucan, and Suetonius for the Penguin classics, and compiled the first modern dictionary of Greek mythology, THE GREEK MYTHS. He was elected Professor of Poetry at Oxford in 1961, and became an Honorary Fellow of St John's College, Oxford, in 1971. He published a new edition of his COLLECTED POEMS in 1975. Robert Graves died in December 1985 in Majorca, his home since 1929.

Sendak Illustrations and the Kid Wins

This book scored a very big hit with my 5-year-old grandson and both of his parents. The kid is not as powerless as he thought, even though he's just a kid, and he gets to win. For kids who often feel like they don't have anything to say about their lives and the grownups have all the power, this is a charming, happy story. I love the illustrations, as well. My daughter and son-in-law are both working artists and Maurice Sendak is a family favorite.

The End of Rabbit Pies and Sheer Green Magic

If ever you are in need of a smile, this short children's book by Robert Graves and wonderful illustrations by Maurice Sendak will do the trick. The text is cleverly simplistic and elegant, and the amusing pictures tell it all. When Jack, an unhappy orphaned boy left in the custody of a rather dim aunt and uncle, discovers a large dusty book in the attic, he is able to redress the situation on the home front as well as curing the family dog of a dubious habit by means of a few wise and funny wishes. The last one he makes is bound to make everybody laugh with appreciation. An original and great book for people of all ages who want to grow up to be a kid.

I am 45 and I got this book (in german: das grüne Buch) as a gift when I was seven. I never forgot it. Once, when I was in 3rd grade, I took it to school and our (mathematics) teacher read it out loud during class. The teacher himself was touched by the book and came to me, and assured that it was a very fine book.

About the Author
With Old Yeller, Fred Gipson secured his place as one of the finest novelists in America. The book was published to instant acclaim and has become one of the most beloved children's classics ever written. Since its publication in 1956, Old Yeller has won countless awards, including the 1957 Newbery Honor. Mr. Gipson's other works include both fiction and non-fiction. He grew up in the Texas hill country and died in 1973.

A MUST FOR YOUNG READERS!

I'm a 7th grade teacher and I introduced my students to this novel for the first time this year. To my amazement they had never even heard of OLD YELLER. Now, middle school students can be the toughest audience in the world but THEY LOVED THIS BOOK.
Author Fred Gipson perfectly captures the time period of Texas in the late 1800's and the challenges of daily life. Into the mix of chores and adventures on the farm is the universal bond of a boy and his dog. Travis and Old Yeller are two characters that any child will immediately connect with and grow to love. And naturally as many novels geared towards younger readers, the conclusion will remain with them long after the novel has been read.
On a side note I must also recommend the classic Walt Disney version of OLD YELLER (VHS or DVD). Young readers will enjoy the similarities and differences between novel and movie. It's an excellent example to build discussion or writing lessons involving comparisons or contrasts.
And while I have continually mentioned young readers I should also comment that OLD YELLER is a must-read for people of any age group. So the next time you need to be entertained by a great novel, pick up this classic.

A good book; A sad, but good book

This heart-warming book is about Old Yeller, (Which mean 'Yellow' in those days) a stray golden-brown dog which Travis' little brother (Little Arliss)finds. Travis hates the dog, who they named 'Old Yeller', until Old Yeller saves Travis' life. Soon they are best buddies, but the fate that is awaiting at the end brings them apart. This book is perfect for ages 7 and up, and is a terrific day-to-day read. This has 16 exciting chapters for either read aloud or silent reading. If your lookin' for a book to read, It's Old Yeller.

Old Yeller is the beautiful, touching story of a boy and his big "yeller" dog.

When Travis's father goes on a cattle drive, Travis takes over the farm. He takes on a big task and is furious to find a big, one-eared, yellow dog eats thier meat, plays in their drinking water, and runs away when his family is in dire need of help. But Old Yeller proves himself when he saves Travis's litttle brother, Arliss, from a mad mother bear.

I loved reading Old Yeller because the story became real. I love dogs and it was amazing how detailed the story was. It was touching to read about how close Travis and Old Yeller were brought together.

Old Yeller is a classic novel everyone can read. Fred Gipson tells about the love and loyalty the characters possess for one another. I highly recommend this touching story that filled me with emotion and made my day forever.

My mother recommended this book to my friend when she was raising her daughter back in the 1980's. My sister felt this book was very helpful when she was raising her three boys in the 1990's. I have purchased this copy to pass on to my daughter who is struggling with her young son.

Some concepts okay, others outdated & ineffective

I'm a Christian parent and have listened to several audiobooks on parenting for my strong-willed children. While some of the concepts in Dobson's book are good old common sense, others do not seem to be effective when parenting a strong-willed child, a child with ADHD or other physical/emotional issues. And of course, the advice on spanking is controversial. If you can spank effectively, that's fine, but the truth is, most of us can't! The idea that you spank a child for discipline purposes only and not as a response to your own anger is purely theory only. How many parents do you see spanking children because they are furious and at their wit's end? Most of us can't do it effectively so there must be a better way! Try listening/reading "Raising Your Spirited Child" or "How to Talk so Kids Will Listen and Listen to So Kids Will Talk". These books will go one step further than Dobson's book and offer alternatives to spanking.

Petropoulou places special emphasis on the fact that Christians gave completely new meanings to the term `sacrifice'. She also explores the question why, if animal sacrifice was of prime importance in the eastern Mediterranean at this time, Christians should ultimately have rejected it.

Meticulous...but also Dense and Disjoint

I really wanted to love this book. First, I must congratulate the scholar on her exemplary research. The strength of this book is indeed its meticulousness. I applaud her attention to not just the details to be found in the texts she studies, but also attention to the previous scholarship as pertains to the topic. This aspect of the book is worth a full five stars. What hurts the book is its density and disjointness. Perhaps a few more charts would have helped, as she frames the whole of the book on a horizontal and vertical map she repeatedly refers to, but we never get to actually see applied. Just in general I was asked to fill in a lot of gaps and the book seemed to jump from one place to the next. I would get a splash of detail followed by a declaration of the problematic lack of evidence. This only served to heighten the disjointness. In the end, the author offers commentary on the New Testament in light of the research. Again, great details. But where is the context into which I would place these details? I am writing this review not to complain, but to ask for something. With so much of value in this book, I think it would be helpful if perhaps some supplemental materials were added. I think the author must be energized and onto something with her references to the horizontal/vertical map. Perhaps if the author has a university web page she could publish some supplemental maps that show how the details she discovered in her research and how they can be applied to, and understood within, her framework structure. The point is important, something shifted, I hear that. Please. Show me.

A seminal work of meticulous scholarship

Blood sacrifice is a fundamental aspect of most antiquarian religious belief systems including what would become the Judeo-Christian religions of the western world. Christianity would view the crucifixion of Jesus as the ultimate blood sacrifice and replace animal sacrifice with the sacraments of wine and bread taking the symbolic place of flesh and blood. But how was animal sacrifice carried out and how did it evolve in the context of the Greco-Roman period within which Christianity was to emerge? "Animal Sacrifice In Ancient Greek Religion, Judaism, And Christianity, 100 BC to AD 200" by Maria-Zoe Petropoulou (a teacher on the International Baccalaureate program of the Hellenic American Foundation, Athens) specifically addresses animal sacrifice, sources and methodology in ancient Greece, the character of Jewish sacrificial ritual worship and how it differed from the Greeks, and relationship of the early Christians (a widely persecuted minority within the Roman empire) to animal sacrifice up to AD 200. Of special note is Professor Petropoulou's epilogue 'A Suggestion Concerning the Reasons for the Cessation of Animal Sacrifice'. Enhanced with an extensive bibliography and a comprehensive index, "Animal Sacrifice In Ancient Greek Religion, Judaism, And Christianity, 100 BC to AD 200" is a seminal work of meticulous scholarship that has been critiqued by the Oxford Classical Monograph Series' Faculty Board of Classics, and therefore is very strongly recommended as an informed and informative addition to personal, academic, and community library reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

Lots of data, needs more synthesis

I appreciate the detailed research, but this book is really a mess. The lines of argumentation are not clear. The detail is there, but there is need of a much more refined synthesis.
