Heart of Stone: My Quest for Justice for Azaria, by Michael Chamberlain

After 30 years of silence, and on the eve of the verdict of a Fourth Inquest, Michael Chamberlain writes his own account of the death of his baby daughter Azaria Chamberlain in a heart-wrenching and compelling book. Never before has Michael Chamberlain spoken about this tragic event and the release comprises a number of picture sections with exclusive unreleased family images. The story of the Chamberlains has been the one subject that has divided many a dinner party throughout Australia and the world. They were a young family who loved the outdoors. When they took their two young children and baby to Ayers Rock they never knew their lives would be forever changed. Tragedy struck when a dingo forced its way into the tent and dragged their daughter Azaria to its lair. 'That dingo's got my baby!'. That 'cry in the dark' on 17 August, 1980 of her mother Lindy Chamberlain remains imprinted in the world's mind. In Heart of Stone Michael takes the reader back to the place where it all began - Ayers Rock (before it was also named Uluru) . In a detailed, methodical and emotional account he writes of all tragic moment when Lindy heard the 'cry in the dark' and the discovery of the empty baby's bed. Michael describes that long night - with Aboriginal trackers springing to their aid to search, and the head ranger who had agonized for three months previous about the troublesome dingoes in the camping areas. He describes in detail the heartache of the first inquest at Ayers Rock - the first to be broadcast live - which declared that the dingo had taken the baby, and then the turnaround, when he and his wife were charged with suspected murder. Michael describes his life in the painful and horrendous lead up to the arrest and persecution of his wife Lindy and her wrongful imprisonment for the murder of her own child in the 'trial of the century'. He takes the reader through their ordeal of the following inquests, the tragic breakup of their marriage. When an English tourist fell off the rock the search led to the discovery of the 'matinee jacket' in a dingo lair. The news led to Lindy's release 'on compassionate grounds' and yet another inquiry. All of these events are described, as Michael lived in the unrelenting glare of the media, whose opinion and fostering of rumours added to the impression of the public of Michael and his family. There were unfounded rumours, for example, that Azaria meant 'sacrifice in the desert' when it actually means 'blessed'. Questions over Michael's reluctance to cry in public, or his reserved nature were taken to mean he was hiding the truth. Michael's own determination for justice has led to a fourth inquest in the Northern Territory of Australian into the death of Azaria. This book is about getting justice for a family, full circle. It is about the impossible mission driven this time by me, against all odds; to open the fourth inquest and the truth, backed by the law, declaring that a dingo killed Azaria. While Lindy has published her own book, with a TV mini series based on that, John Bryson has written Evil Angels and Meryl Streep starred in Cry in the Dark, this book is a missing link in the story of Azaria, written in his own hand by her father. Worth the Read
By Peter P
I received "Heart of Stone" as a gift from a friend living in Australia. I live in the United States, and was a high school student in Montana when the central events discussed in this book took place. I had no prior knowledge of the case. But for receiving the book as a gift, it is unlikely I would have read it. But, having read "Heart of Stone," I'm glad I did, although to some degree it was an effort. The book will not be for everyone, but I will briefly explain what you will find, and my impressions.

The complete book title is: "Heart of Stone: Justice for Azaria." Azaria Chamberlain tragically lost her life in 1980 at Ayers Rock (now called Uluru), Australia when Azaria was only two months old. She disappeared from her tent, and her body was never found. The ensuing mystery of what happened to Azaria, and the surrounding legal proceedings, galvanized a nation. The case is now a part of Australian culture. "Heart of Stone" is the personal memoir of Michael Chamberlain, the father of Azaria.

Did a dingo drag away Azaria from a tent and kill her, or did some form of human intervention exist? In 1982, a jury found Michael Chamberlain's wife, Lindy Chamberlain, guilty of murder, and Michael Chamberlain was pronounced guilty of being an accessory after the fact. This book focuses primarily on the many surrounding legal proceedings, evidence used, and associated intense media scrutiny. In 2012 at a fourth coroner's inquest, the coroner found that Azaria was taken and killed by a dingo, and the death certificate was changed accordingly (these findings were issued after the book was published).

Michael Chamberlain contends that his wife Lindy should never have been found guilty of murdering Azaria (or he found guilty of being an after the fact accessory). Mr. Chamberlain argues that the evidence simply did not support the jury decision, and the reason for the guilty verdict was a combination of unfair media coverage, bias and prejudice by the Northern Territory, and fundamentally flawed forensic evidence (among other issues).

The book is presented largely in chronological order. The major waypoints are: four inquests (two preliminary coroner inquiries between 1980-1982, and two later coroner inquiries in 1995 and 2012), a court trial, an appeal to a High Court of Appeal and then to the High Court, Royal Commission proceedings (a special commission appointed by the federal/commonwealth government), and an appeal to the Northern Territory Criminal Court of Appeal (Australia has six states, and ten territories--the events here took place in the Northern Territory). Each legal proceeding is discussed and analyzed. Contemporaneous quotations or comments are often provided from newspapers or other sources. The book contains a helpful chronology, a detailed glossary of people and terms, and an index. Three sets of color photos are included, at least in the hard copy version.

Between the general bookends of the legal proceedings above, a variety of recurring themes occur. The specific evidence in the case is discussed at length. For example, was evidence in the Chamberlain's car blood, or something else? Did dingo hairs exist on Azaria's jumpsuit, or not? As important as some of the specific evidence might be, at least arguably it is the broader issues raised by "Heart of Stone" that are of even more long-term interest. The role of the media is scrutinized repeatedly--the good and the bad. The motives of the Northern Territory are examined. The fairness of some of the proceedings is questioned, in particular the quashing of the first inquest, and the format and conduct of the second inquest. The justice system is questioned: what accountability do forensic experts have? To what extent do social or cultural pressures shape what we think or believe? Mr. Chamberlain was a minister for the Seventh Day Adventists, and he recounts speculation or accusations about the church and its beliefs and practices. "Heart of Stone" raises a timely question about the relationship and authority of the federal government to its states/territories (a question equally relevant in the United States). These themes and issues are not minor plotlines. They are starkly and directly presented by and through the thirty-year course of the Azaria case.

At one level, the writing is not engaging. But Mr. Chamberlain is not trying to entertain. Rather, "Heart of Stone" is an earnest and sincere effort to present a synthesize thirty years of information and life experiences. It's a plea for justice. It's heartfelt. And, in reading "Heart of Stone," one cannot help but be touched by the enormity of the personal struggle the Chamberlains went through as a family. One night changed a family's life forever, and arguably the course of a nation. The questions raised by this book--religion, personal belief, justice, society, government--are timeless. In my opinion, the book is worth a read, and I personally am glad Mr. Chamberlain took the time and effort to write this book.

Very enlightening.

I remember when this whole story happened. I grew up in Australia, and couldn't believe that a Mum could kill her own child. I'm glad the truth came out .

Review
“One of the really significant things about this work is how widely Jasper ranges in his exploration of the spiritual meaning of the desert. He considers classic religious sources that have focused their attention on the desert ideal... But he also explores the works of a range of artists, poets, writers, and filmmakers... The result is a playful, interdisciplinary rumination upon the myriad ways the desert has shaped and continues to shape — often by undermining expectations of meaning — the religions imagination. Recommended. Upper-level undergraduates and above; general readers.”

"The Sacred Desert is a marvellous and truly integral conjunction of seemingly every dimension of that ultimate desert which is at once our deepest beginning and our deepest ending. Theological and poetic at once, and critical and historical simultaneously, it offers us a vicarious voyage into our most ultimate ground, a ground beyond God but nontheless embodying the totality of the Godhead. If that Godhead is an absolute nothingness, it is a truly actual nothingness, and most actual for us in that desert which is here so powerfully and so comprehensively evoked." Thomas Altizer, Professor Emeritus of Religious Studies at the State University of New York and Stony Brook

"The Sacred Desert provides a journey into the innermost core of the self--where the soul stands alone before an unknown God, who is both darkness and light. David Jasper has written a magnificent theological reflection on the depth of spiritual meaning sought and found by desert pilgrims in literature, art, film, history, and sacred scripture. A tour de force!"

From the Back Cover
The Sacred Desert is a fascinating and original work, which reflects on the role of the desert in theology, history, literature, art and film.

Engaging with figures as diverse as Jesus, the early Christian Desert Fathers, William Blake, T.E. Lawrence, T.S. Eliot, Georgia O’Keeffe, Wim Wenders, Bill Viola, and Jim Crace, author David Jasper explores deserts as real places, as interior spaces and as they feature in numerous texts. He makes connections across millennia of desert texts, meditating on the mystical, religious and theological meanings that emerge. Underlying these interdisciplinary wanderings in the wasteland is the author’s quest for a new form of religious thought and language. Lively and lucid, this outstanding work stretches from the Bible – perhaps still the greatest of our desert texts – through to contemporary experiences of the desert. It is truly an original work of theology, and a captivating journey through the history of religion.

Skillfully weaves together an eclectic source of cultural responses to desert space
By Edward
Jasper has produced a masterful study filled with a myriad of traditional, modern, and postmodern sources. A thoroughly engrossing and lively meditation. As one who has written about the desert as well as lived there, I am happy to report that Jasper always gets it right in this innovative cultural and spiritual discussion.

Putting the Body Back Into Theology
By Gabriel Thomas
The main axis around which David Jasper's book swings is, as the title should suggest, the "desert." But in line with brilliant thinkers and artists like Brian Rotman, Jackson Pollock, and (in some sense) Quentin Meillassoux, he's putting physicality back into thought - putting the body back into theology. So Jasper's book is not simply 'about' the desert; rather, it attempts to BE a desert experience. In this way, he harkens back to a set of lives and texts with which his book essentially begins, and which are returned to and engaged ceaselessy throughout "The Sacred Desert": the lives of the Desert Fathers and Mothers, as retold in the "Historia Monachorum," "The Lausiac History," "The Life of St. Antony," and (briefly) through the monastic communities established in accordance with the lifestyles and principles of these desert ascetics.

Jasper isn't trying necessarily to make a novel point or invent a new way of going about theology, he's simply retrieving what he considers the liturgical, apocalyptic, embodied, and immanent theology of the likes of St. Antony, Meister Eckhart, San Juan de la Cruz, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Hegel, Blake, Thomas Altizer, and others. And for that reason, "The Sacred Desert" is fundamentally a compilation of texts - of grains of sand - that lead us (and Jasper) to the sun, the "still, small wind," the heat, the oases, the solitude and flatness of the desert. Because for Jasper, and for (the oft-quoted) Jewish-Egyptian poet Edmond Jabes, true mystical, spirtual experience is to be found in the wilderness that is paradoxically a "nothing," yet full of a "being" whose Otherness decenters us from any place or space, except that space and place that make room for the Word beyond language but found in the Book... that is: the desert.

This may sound like a strange and incoherent mess, loopy and trite, perhaps, but that's becuase (a) I don't do Jasper and his book justice, and (b) there is certainly a sense of grasping in "The Sacred Desert," but a grasping that arises from a disinterest in colonizing thought and conquering new modes of thinking; instead seeking the inclusion of readers in a genuine experience of scholarship, theology, and (in Blanchot's phrase) the Space of Jasper's Literature. Even now parts of his book are forcing me to stop and intimately consider what he's written or shown. It's not all come together for me yet. But, if you're at all interested in where theology could be headed after the postmodern, here's a taste, and maybe more.

The Envoy: From Kabul to the White House, My Journey Through a Turbulent World, by Zalmay Khalilzad

Zalmay Khalilzad grew up in a traditional family in the ancient city of Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan. As a teenager, Khalilzad spent a year as an exchange student in California, where after some initial culture shocks he began to see the merits of America's very different way of life. He believed the ideals that make American culture work, like personal initiative, community action, and respect for women, could make a transformative difference to his home country, the Muslim world and beyond. Of course, 17-year-old Khalilzad never imagined that he would one day be in a position to advance such ideas.

With 9/11, he found himself uniquely placed to try to shape mutually beneficial relationships between his two worlds. As U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan and Iraq, he helped craft two constitutions and forge governing coalitions. As U.S. Ambassador to the UN, he used his unique personal diplomacy to advance U.S. interests and values. In The Envoy, Khalilzad details his experiences under three presidential administrations with candid behind-the-scenes insights. He argues that America needs an intelligent, effective foreign policy informed by long-term thinking and supported by bipartisan commitment.

Part memoir, part record of a political insider, and part incisive analysis of the current Middle East, The Envoy arrives in time for foreign policy discussions leading up to the 2016 election.

Review

**One of Parag Khanna's Ten Great Global Reads for Summer 2016**

"There have been a number of memoirs by Bush administration officials, but Mr. Khalilzad’s is far and away the most reflective, honest and compelling." ―The Washington Times

"For anyone desiring a detailed chronicle of America’s nation-building efforts after the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, Mr. Khalilzad’s book should be required reading." ―Wall Street Journal

"One of the most intriguing individuals to play a leading role in the Bush-era wars is Zalmay Khalilzad, a polished diplomat who was the most senior Muslim in the White House at the time of the 9/11 attacks." ―The Financial Times

"A chronological, straightforward, occasionally disturbing history of the challenges leading to the current morass." ―Kirkus Reviews

“It was fascinating to watch Zal operate in Afghanistan: he knew the country better than any of the foreigners who were in the city and he cared for it as much as any Afghan did. He knew Iraq better than almost all the American officials who were responsible for the decisions whose consequences led to the present situation in the country and the region. Khalilzad's book tells his story with an honest detachment which is refreshingly different from the self-serving, biased accounts we have been used to getting." ―Lakhdar Brahimi

"The Envoy is the story of the remarkable life journey of one of our nation's great diplomats. Riveting in its telling, inspiring in its stories, and insightful in its commentary, The Envoy is a book that should find its way onto the bookshelf of anyone who cherishes the American dream and cares about what is happening in our world today." Michael Morell, former Acting and Deputy Director of the CIA and author of the bestselling book about terrorism, The Great War of Our Time

"Zal Khalilzad was the premier American diplomate of the last decade, serving as the top U.S. envoy to Afghanistan, Iraq and the United Nations. He made and has now written an important contribution to our post 9/11 history. Zal's is also a uniquely American story, of someone born in a distant land and raised in a different culture who embraced and then represented with distinction his adopted land." ―James Dobbins

“Zalmay Khalilzad is a special talent and colleague who not only thinks strategically, but deftly implements policies on the ground in the most challenging of circumstances. His finger-tip feel for the politics, culture, and personalities of the Middle East, combined with his understanding of the measured use of America’s capabilities, has made him one of the most effective diplomats in recent times. Zal has written a memoir that recounts events he saw firsthand with important insights for today's challenges.” ―Donald H. Rumsfeld

"A remarkably candid account by a man who was at the eye of the storm of U.S. foreign policy over the first decade of the 21st century. Ambassador Zal Khalilzad understands as few others do the complex interplay between politics and policy in Washington, and what it takes to implement those decisions in some of the toughest environments around the world." ―Lt. General David Barno (ret.), former head of Combined Forces Command-Afghanistan

“I'm so pleased that Zal has finally written this long overdue book. I'm not given to cultural arguments, but there was something about Zal's effectiveness in the Middle East that seemed attributable to his comfort with the ways of the region -- and better yet, the region's comfort level with him. His perspective is invaluable.” ―Condoleezza Rice

“Zalmay Khalilzad and I were both born abroad, became American, and worked as academics and practitioners of U.S. foreign policy. He has always operated with a positive vision about what America represents in the world. Zal offers compelling insights into what it means to be of two places, and he has a fascinating and gritty story to share of the making of U.S. policy in one of the most complicated and challenging regions of the world.” ―Madeleine Albright

Must Reading on the Wars in Afghanistan and Iraq
By laup
People will be debating the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq for many years and I no longer believe that historians will eventually get it "right." Sometimes, the most that we can hope for is articulate accounts conveying honest perspectives and a sense for confusing realities with which senior leaders must deal. This is such a book. It is also without recriminations or debt-settling. Beyond this, the reader will be charmed by Khalilzad's personal story from being a child in Afghanistan to becoming an ambassador known and respected worldwide. Even junkies for the literature on the wars in Afghanistan and Iran will find themselves grudgingly learning a good deal and having to adjust some of their thinking. This is not a book about heroes and villains. It is a book with lessons for those who worry about strategy (Khalilzad is a strategic thinker and analyst) and those who appreciate the necessity for artful, persistent, and exhausting tactics (Khalilzad was exceptionally deft in his negotiations, and also to a remarkable degree successful).

If I have a substantive criticism, it is that Khalilzad--despite having written a respectful-of-all, non political, non partisan book--casually asserts that President Obama's decision to leave Iraq was a big mistake. The reality is more complexl. President Bush promised complete withdrawal by December 31 2011, as actually occurred. Many military and foreign-policy figures urged that the US leave tens of thousands of forces for a longer period, but negotiations for such an extension with acceptable protections for U.S. forces were unsuccessful. Some insist that such an extension could have been obtained if President Obama had merely tried harder; others (with comparable rank and access) insist that Iraqi nationalism and internal politics made that impossible. So also, Khalilzad criticizes the Obama administration for not allowing the military sufficient time to execute the necessary campaign in Afghanistan without acknowledging the absence of evidence to support the belief that more time would have made a difference. Arguably, the fundamental problem was and remains Pakistan. Another problem was governance within Afghanistan, which showed no sign of improvement under Karzai. President Obama, whether wisely or unwisely, concluded that enough blood and money had been squandered on wars that could not be won. The American people had obviously had their fill as well.

All told, this is an excellent, engaging, and informative book. I suspect that history would have turned out more cheerfully had more of Khalilzad's advice been taken along the way and if the U.S. had been fortunate enough to have at least one more person with his talents.

Superb Read -- Very Informative
By The Mallard
Zalmay Khalilzad was born and raised in Afghanistan. For his senior year of high school, he came to the U.S. and lived with an American family in Ceres, California. Thus began a love affair with this country ultimately leading to U.S. citizenship.
His new book is titled The Envoy, with the sub-titled, From Kabul to the Whitehouse, My Journey Through a Turbulent World. The book is much more than a memoir. It is a wonderful tale of the impressions of a young man from a third world country seeing a modern country for the first time; a short history of Afghanistan; an amazing and poignant firsthand account of U.S. involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq; a prescription for a way forward for as we try to cope with an increasingly complex world. It is all this and more.
Khalizad attained his bachelor's and master's degrees from the American University Beirut, Lebanon and a PhD at the University of Chicago. He has a wealth of experience in international affairs, working both in and out of government. Most significantly, he served as U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan and Iraq during the George W Bush administration.
Reading Khalizad’s account, first of our efforts in Afghanistan and then Iraq, is almost like being involved in the decision processes that have affected success and failure of those consuming ventures. Anyone who has followed these two conflicts and their aftermath will repeatedly nod her head as Khalilzad describes one bad decision after another.
In the final analysis, and notwithstanding the man y times his recommendations were ignored, Khalilzad had substantial influence on decisions and outcomes. Thus is must be concluded that he was uniquely qualified to serve in his various positions, and the U.S. was indeed fortunate to have him in the government.
One of Khalilzad’s best capabilities is as a strategic thinker. Throughout the book, as many around him took the short-range view, he consistently considered the longer term. Hence it is no surprise that he has some very sound prescriptive measures for our country as we forge ahead.
Readers of this book – regardless of political persuasion – will like and respect Zalmay Khalilzad. It is easy to conclude that Afghanistan’s loss was our gain when he became an American.

A well written book. I admire the fact that he has been quite honest while writing this book. Quite an insight from both wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
I quite did not like his approaches in forming the Afghanistan Government. In addition, I found it bias about his statements that a "Pashtun" should be the president because they are the majority. This is wrong for many reasons. First because there is no official statics on Afghanistan tribes, and second, there are all minorities in Afghanistan. Overall, I liked it and would recommend it.

Karamojo Safari, by W.D.M. Bell

This is the tale of Walter Bell's epic journey into Karamojo [now divided between Uganda and Kenya] some 100 years ago when it was still completely unknown to Western man. Bell's safari lasted 14 months, and during that time he shot 180 tuskers and brought back 18,762 lbs of ivory. Of these, 31 tusks weighed over 100 lbs each, and the largest pair weighed in at 145 and 148 lbs. Nobody has ever accomplished a feat like this, especially amazing considering the logistics of the day." Bell's safari began on the Kenyan coast, and his account leads the reader through the whole process of preparation and the recruitment of porters, a blow by blow account of the safari itself, concluding with his triumphant and heavily laden return. "Not only is this a superb hunting story, but [this book] also offers true insight into the lives of Africans before colonization. Because Bell approached his crew and the tribes he met as equals, we get an unbiased account of what life in Africa really was like in precolonial days." A terrific read, packed with excitement and adventure, and a great deal of insight.

Hemp - American History Revisited, Vital Resource to Contentious Weed, by Robert Deitch

Who put the Hemp in Hempstead? Before the cotton gin, hemp was an essential raw material valued for its fiber and oil, as a fuel and a medicine. This colorful socio-economic history clears the smoke obscuring hemp's role in battles between Britain and the colonies, the North and South, the haves and have-nots, and the marijuana lobby and their foes. Deitch offers a look at major events in US and world history as they influenced, and as they may have been influenced by, the cultivation and use of hemp.

Politics of Pot
By hemphrey
If you groaned through history class in school this may not be the book for you. If on the other hand, you want an insightful overview of the history of cannabis in America, Hemp - American History Revisited is the perfect introduction to one of the most bizarre smear campaigns in mankind's history. With great detail, Deitch examines the happy prospects of a vibrant natural resource in our budding nation and reveals our founding father's thoughtful attention to their own "budding" interests. He details the failure of the great social experiment, prohibition, and cleverly demonstrates how this mammoth failure in American policy set the stage for the annihilation of the most harmless of home remedies. We learn how the personal interests of a few overshadowed the practical interests of the many; how the timber, petroleum and pharmaceutical power houses covertly manipulated the legislative process monopolize the "legal" resources of a growing industrial nation. The most enlightening aspect of this book is Deitch's straight-on analysis of the economic functions of hemp in our society and the social calamity that ensues when government tampers with free enterprise system. I found this book at the library, but will purchase a copy for my personal collection as I am sure to refer to it often as cannabis war continues.

American History Divided - Hemp
By GeekSpeak
The word "hemp" should be part of the subtitle rather than the title of this book. Although Deitch follows the history of hemp from our colonization through its industrialization to its politicization, he also spends a large portion of this book discussing agriculture, economics and politics in America through this time making this book an excellent history text along the lines of Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States : 1492-Present" and Daniel Yergin's "Prize : The Epic Quest for Oil, Money & Power".
