A fine book

A fine book. Worth the read. A good book to read after reading "I, Claudius". I suggest reading the fictional novels along with the history book. The novels will get you enthused, the history book will get you informed. Enjoy.

A Very Dry, Scholarly Book

I really wish that I could recommend this book stronger. Claudius was a very interesting person, that much is clear, but Ms. Levick does a horrible job of it. As one previous reviewer noted, she continually refers to Claudius as THE usurper. The reason for using such a strongly negative word in association with Claudius isn't clear. Certainly he could be considered a usurper, although given the circumstances of his predecessor Caligula's death it's hard to state who had more of a right than him, but to refer to him as such constantly is annoying. It's even stranger considering that her presentation of him is generally positive even though she seems to work hard to use negative terms in describing him. Now, I'm not complaining because her view of Claudius is different than mine. I don't know many biographies where I agree with all the interpretations. It just seems that she doesn't put enough effort into finding out who he truly was. Or perhaps she has, and just doesn't present it well. All I know is that it seems a jumbled mess.

The other thing about this book is that it, in common with a number of other scholarly books, is divided into two basic sections. The first part from 1-80 is a basic narrative of his personal life. By this I mean his marriages, his family, and the many conspiracies against his life. This would seem to be the more interesting section, but she never mentions anything outside this limited topic. As you can imagine, it's confusing to have her refer to major events such as the conquest of Britain without explaining anything about it. And that reference only came about in relation to one of the senators who was executed. The section on the invasion comes only in the second section of the book. I know that scholars like to divide a reign up into sections but in what purports to be, in part, a biography it interferes with the narrative. Some mention of the major events of his reign need to be placed in the first section just so that it can be understood where they stand in relation to the other events. It doesn't help that her dry style is particularly hard to work through. The second star is only there because this is the only biography that I could find on this interesting man. If a better one comes out I may revise my opinion downwards.

Claudius

This book was an excellent overview of one of the critical emperors during the formation of the early Christian church. Profesor Levick provided new insights into one of the lesser known Emperors, and some excellent suggestions as to why he might have taken some of the actions that he did. This would be an excellent source for anyone studying early Christianity as well as roman emperors.

A little of what I think about this book.

What an interesting and thought-provoking book this is. It gives an in depth and fascinating look at human nature; what we are and why we behave the way we do in the game of love. If you truly want an understanding of love, this is the book for you.

I would suggest this book to anyone who is looking for a new person to share their life with, or if you're trying to understand the person you are with now. Perhaps you are trying to better understand yourself and some of the feelings and emotions that we all have that change over time.

This book was written in total seriousness with a good sense of humor. You will find yourself smiling at some parts, being angry at other parts or feel almost like crying. I assure you it is because you will see yourself in at least one of the situations you will read. There will be denial and disagreement also, but if you have an open mind you will find an understanding that you never had before. Things will fall into place like pieces of a puzzle that never fit together or made any sense before. It will give you a very good idea of yourself and what you should be looking for in a partner. But most important is "You must be honest with yourself about your personality" for this to work for you. You might not agree with some of the truly amazing ideas this book will give you, (they might take some time to sink in and get used to). But I promise you that you will look at love with a different perspective after reading this book for the rest of your life.

After reading this book I immediately gave it to my son to read and have told several others they need to get this book! If you or anyone you know is having troubles in a relationship and that fits most of us, you need this book. Give yourself or someone you love, the gift of understanding.

The Mystique of Love Unveiled: How to Take Control of Your Life by L.K. Mickelson is a book for everyone seeking personal efficacy in the midst of love’s empowering and disruptive pervasiveness. It is a book about the paradox of love. The decisions we make to love someone involve complex emotional life experiences that Mickelson comprehends and appreciates—the breadth of feelings and the difficult experiences involved with falling in and out of love.

Many books oversimplify the subject of love, whereas The Mystique of Love takes a head-on approach to the risks involved with love as well as the enigmatic and sometimes abstruse qualities it possesses. Excitement, survival, sexuality, attachment, intellect, the practicality of love vs the emotional hurt that can accompany its fecund nature are areas that are all taken into account via classical references and anthropological and scientific data.

Mickelson’s approach to the subject of love is rewarding to any reader because of his use of personal logic and familiar passages from popular culture. Take control of your love life

What is love? Tracing back as far as Adam and Eve, poets, philosophers, psychologists, and physiologists have puzzled over the many manifestations of love. But what do we really know about love? Children ask, “How will I know I am in love?” Parents typically issue a syrupy platitude. But the emotions that we categorize as evidence of love are actually quite the antithesis of the good feeling that love should imply. All too often we feel upset, threatened, or irrational and call that love.

Author, Larry Mickelson, argues that love “is directly proportional to the amount of pleasure being derived from the love object” and that conflating the emotions we have traditionally associated with love as the thing itself is a journey of self-defeat. Uncovering Love’s Hidden Truths: A Fresh Look at a Complex Topic is Mickleson’s attempt to clarify the concept of love and untangle it from the basket of emotional states that swirl around it and masquerade as love, when in fact emotional storms are the uncomfortable result of time-dependency, not love.

Mickelson breaks love into four types: sexual love, attachment love, intellectual love, and emotional love. He advises that the ideal rating (on a scale of 1 – 10) of each type of love in a relationship should equal 10,10,10, 5, with emotional love receiving the least emphasis. Given the willy-nilly characteristics of emotions, the lower ranking is important in creating a stable relationship with meaningful commitment.

Perhaps the most compelling idea in the book is that of time-dependency, which describes the progression of habits that we come to rely upon in our relationships. Not surprisingly, time-dependency is tied directly to emotional love and it is when time-dependency (or habits) are interrupted that our emotions flare up and cause us to think and behave irrationally.

These ideas and many more are methodically explained and underlined with a variety of poignant quotations from books, popular films, and philosophers. The book is well crafted and organized. The writing is engaging and written for a general audience. Some of the ideas presented will fly in the face of readers who think they understand love as the highest and most sacred emotion. Mikelson’s authority comes from years of observation and from his background in psychology and counseling. He includes no scientific evidence or research to support his ideas. But an open mind will nod in recognition at his logic. Being mindful of his advice may steer singles toward more enriching relationships than they’ve encountered in the past. Understanding the emotions we confuse with love will soften the misery of those who have recently, or are in the process of, ending a relationship.

Book holds pretty well after 80 years

This book, written by historian Eileen Power in 1924, and trying the then novel approach of looking at history through the lives of common people, holds up pretty well. Only the chapter on Marco Polo has aged somewhat (today's historians are much more skeptical on whether Polo even visited China, given the number of inaccuracies in his book; this problem is too complex to be dealt here). The rest of the chapters are very good in bringing to our eyes the lives of people who lived so long ago and in a very different society. I think the best chapter is the first one, about Bodo the frankish peasant. It is the only character on the book that lived before the 1000s, and that's a bit of a problem, as so much of the people in the book are from the late middle ages (but then, I suppose Power has very few sources from the period between the 6th and 10th centuries, with the exception of the carolingian reign, a problem historians still have today). All in all, a good book on medieval everyday life that holds up pretty well.

Bringing the medieval middle class and poor to life

These are genuinely endearing stories of individuals of medieval Europe who were not royalty or aristocracy. Power gleans details of the lives of these people from numerous sources, and, at least in the case of the peasant, Bodo, uses these sources to create a composite character, due to the lack of sufficient historical information about one individual.

Powers describes the lives, homes, general living conditions and practices, the towns and villages, and the working and leasure time of her subjects. With varying degrees of success, Powers is able to bring three-dimensional figures to life, and at the end of this work, one feels like one is leaving new friends.

Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys cultural history or simply wants a better idea of medieval life.

Born in Melbourne in 1943, Adrian Feldmann was one of the first Westerners to become a monk in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. On the eve of a three-year, solitary meditation retreat, he recounts the inner and outer journeys that lead him to Nepal where, in the early 1970's, he met two Tibetan lamas, Lama Thubten Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche. They were among the first lamas to teach Buddhism to Westerners.

In the 1970's, Adrian Feldmann was a young doctor wrapped up in the hippie counter-culture, experimenting with mind-altering drugs and studying Eastern mysticism. Seeking a greater purpose to his life, he began to travel. Following his friends on the hippie trail, he travelled through Afghanistan where he was impressed by the spiritual power of Islam. Inspired by his reading of Taoist philosophy, he and some friends bought a converted rowing boat and sailed down the Indus River, searching for freedom and a more authentic way of living. What he found launched him on the spiritual path to Buddhism.

This personal account of one man's search for happiness is often humorous and sometimes shocking. Adrian Feldmann doesn't shirk revealing the mistakes and failings which help to highlight his personal message of hope. He wants us to know that the ego undermines our happiness and fortifies our habitual, destructive emotions. His spiritual path is a quest to "slay the ego," and his life story is a parable for modern times.

This title was first published in 2005 by Lothian Books as a paperback book. This updated ebook version is published by the Lama Yeshe Wisdom Archive and includes a postscript from the author recounting the continuing saga of his spiritual path.

Reads like an adventure story

The book starts out with the monk's travel adventures and love stories which lure you in. You can feel his struggle and desire to know why he has a feeling of dissatisfaction. In writing about his life, you also get a great basic overview of Buddhism. I learned a lot and was inspired by him, his teachers and others in the book.

I've really liked all of her books

I've really liked all of her books, but not this one. It's super silly, had no real action or suspense, and the couple went from "no we can't" to constant sex. There were zombies. Why? (Admittedly I could have been daydreaming when that problem was rectified.) She's a vampire, he's human, although he is a psychic. Do they live as long as vampires? Hope so, otherwise their relationship is going to be short term.
There were ghost, too. They really didn't do much of anything; not spooky or scary or started any trouble. Very disappointing.

Same book, different names

I have loved the Broken Heart books, but this one wanted to make me scream. It is Housewife For Rent redone. All she did was move it from one small Oklahoma town to Broken Heart and changed some of the characters from wacky small town characters into wacky paranormal small-town characters. A lot of it is just totally verbatim the same. I realize since she wrote both books it's not really plagiarism but damn it's lazy!

A Fantastic Time!

This book was fabulous. This entire series is such a great time and this book is such a great addition. I love how the author incorporates new characters and situations while still keeping old and loved characters in the mix. There are so many parts that did have me laughing out loud. For anyone that is looking for a book to get lost in and forget about life for a while this is definitely a great choice!

Good overview, sometimes confusing

Like the rest of the For Dummies books, this one assumes that you have little or no background in the topic that you're reading about. Unlike some of the other Dummies books, the author Thomas Clark restrains from cracking stupid jokes every other paragraph. How refreshing! His writing style is direct, but friendly, without being condescending.

The book's first two chapters cover the basics of and the differences between macro and close-up photography. Here it got a little confusing: first Clark says the differences don't really matter, then he says that they do. You may have to read that twice to get what he's saying; it has to do with the ratio of your image size on your camera's sensor to the actual size of the subject. Once you understand this, you're ready to move on. Next, chapter 3 gets into composition and learning how to see creatively -- no photo book is complete without that. That completes Part I of the book.

Part II has four chapters that cover your photography tools: camera, lenses, reversing rings, extension tubes, and more. Clark gives you tips on shooting macro for both digital SLR cameras and for digital compact cameras that have macro capability. Part III covers lighting, composition, and exposure. Both natural light and artificial light sources are covered, and Clark gets more detailed about composition and how to select your exposures.

Part IV has six chapters on photographic subjects that you're likely to encounter with macro: nature, such as insects and plants; people and pets; product photos and still life; jewelry and other shiny stuff; and extreme macro. There's a chapter on post-production, which is what you do to your digital images once you get them onto your computer. Here I have a big bone to pick. The chapter attempts to cover too much ground and makes too many assumptions: first, the author (and editors) expects you to be working in Photoshop, and secondly, instructions are given only for Mac keyboard shortcuts (chapter 17, page 270). Not everyone works with Photoshop and most certainly not everyone is using a Mac. The editors should have caught this and I'm marking the book down one star because of it.

The book is very well illustrated with a variety of subjects: a shell, a needle and thread, colorful beetles, jewelry, and even a rotini pasta noodle! The photos are clear, crisp, and interesting, and the author tries to prompt your creativity by giving you ideas for photo stories. I recommend the book, but do try to read chapter 17 as an overview and not as a step-by-step instruction guide for every digital imaging program on every computer platform. That's for a few other books.

Continues the Great Work of the Dummies Books

Background: I am a Nikon shooter and shoot only in raw (limited exceptions). My status as a photographer is best described as part-time professional in that I have a day job but make low level money on nights and weekends using my skills. I also only shoot with Nikon pro-level glass.

This book continues the great work of the Dummies series on digital photography to include Digital Photography Exposure For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech)), Digital Photography Lighting For Dummies (For Dummies (Lifestyles Paperback)), and Digital SLR Photography All-in-One For Dummies. It is best described as a series for beginner DSLR users to intermediate users; typically consumer level users seeking to move up and soon to upgrade to cameras such as the Nikon D300s and higher for greater on camera control of exposure and lighting. This book introduces Macro Photography, a subject misunderstood by just about every consumer level shooter.

This book is written for a target audience of beginner photographers and serves as a good source of broad foundational knowledge from which you can build. Book layout is well thought and very logical, with the typical Dummies guide "readability" that I consider superb. The book covers equipment but does not push you into buying anything as some other authors tend to do in more advanced books. Of interest to me was his use of ordinary items as light modifiers, demonstrating with before and after photos that really drive home the point (I personally modify my 10 YO's point and shoot flash with a piece of a napkin for stunning results). As another reviewer noted, anyone who has an SLR and is just getting into lighting, this would make a nice resource but if you don't have an SLR, the info is still good, but you won't be able to apply as much control.

This book would be a great gift for consumer level shooters that want to go beyond the "P" (Program) controls of their camera. Also, a lot of the lessons transcend macro photography and can be applied in a myriad of shooting situations. Beginners will see immediate improvements in their macro work after just a few chapters, assuming they follow the book. Intermediate and advanced users less so, commensurately. The illustrations and layout of the book are stunning in my view. This is atypical of the series.

Great Book!

Digital Macro & Close-Up Photography is a great book for learning how to capture close-up shots with your digital camera. I honestly can't think of anything this book leaves out when it comes to this subject. Everything from the correct equipment to shooting techniques is covered in easy to understand detail. Another great thing about this book is that it is full of color photographs that the reader can use for examples. I found these full-color examples and technique comparisons were really helpful in understanding the authors points.

Thomas Clark also reviews many macro lenses and other equipment to help the reader make an informed decision when it comes to buying the right equipment for macro photography. I will not list all of the specific chapters and topics since you have the ability to see the table of contents for the book on this very page. I will simply say that this book really helps the reader understand different macro photography techniques, something that most basic photography books neglect to cover.

I am merely an amateur photographer, so I will not attempt to get technical in this review. What I will say, is that from the point of view from someone with little experience and knowledge in this field, I found this book easy to understand and very helpful. I think that it is a great book which covers the subject in such a way that even the layman like myself can understand and grasp the concepts that the author explains in this book. Well organized and extremely helpful!! 5 Stars!
