Review
"This . . . important single-volume survey of European economic history during the formative medieval centuries . . . belongs in the great French scholarly tradition initiated by Marc Bloch. Not only does this sensitive and complex analysis of economic and social life from the seventh through the twelfth century introduce the reader to a sequence of fascinating problems, but also it allows him to come to appreciate the inner workings of Duby's mind. . . . This book offers a detailed description of the changing character of agrarian life leading up to the 'take-off' of the 12th and 13th centuries. Leading aspects of the technology, the landscape, the demography, the diet, the climate, etc., are placed against the backdrop of emerging mental attitudes pertaining to money, burial customs, marriage, etc. Duby possesses the talent to translate socioeconomic detail into the stuff of everyday life."―History: Review of the New Books

"This is a splendid book and confirms Georges Duby's standing as one of the best writers of historical synthesis among medievalists today. Few contemporary scholars have shown as much ability both to carry out detailed original research and to generalize about the findings of others."―Speculum

Ground-breaking, but outdated
By Glenn McDorman
Duby's work was ground-breaking in the 1960s, but has now become outdated. That is not to say that his arguments and analyses have proven wrong or been supersceded. It is outdated simply because it has been incorporated into much more detailed and comprehensive accounts written in the last thirty years (particularly by Norman Pounds).
That does not mean that this book is not worth reading. Duby's piece still provides a unique perspective. Although the work as a whole has been incorporated into much bigger books, no one has focused on the same characteristics that he has. Duby writes wonderfully on the gift and plunder economy, the importance of the medieval world-view to economic growth, and the change in technology. Duby's work is most valuable, however, for the image it creates. Duby follows in the French tradition of writing "impressionist histories." In this way Duby gives an excellent idea of what it was like to live in the early medieval period. In many ways The Early Growth of the European Economy is the perfect companion to Marc Bloch's Feudal Society.
This book is still worth reading because of the focus it has and the impression it gives. At under three hundred pages, it is a quick read, and provides an excellent introduction to the topic.

Move students beyond the point-and-click.

The goal of the Exploring series is to move students beyond the point and click, to understanding the why and how behind each skill. And, because so much learning takes place outside of the classroom, this series provides learning tools that students can access anywhere, any time.

Students go to college now with a different set of skills than they did years ago. With this in mind, the Exploring series seeks to move students beyond the basics of the software at a faster pace, without sacrificing coverage of the fundamental skills that everyone needs to know.

OVERPRICED!! I HAD TO BUY IT FOR A COLLEGE CLASS! NOT MY CHOICE!!
By Faisal
Way overpriced!! I purchased this book only because it's required by one of my college classes. You can learn without this book, there are numerous tutorials online and on YouTube that are way more effective than using this textbook. The bottom line is: if you don't have to buy this book, DO NOT DO IT!! Invest your money on something that worth spending that much of money on! Best luck!

DO NOT BUY, DOES NOT COME WITH ACCESS CODE FOR MYITLAB
By Jennifer Padilla
I bought this because my instructor told me that this comes with the MYITLAB because the IBSN code is the one with a package of the textbook and access code. However, after two returns, no access code and it was more of a hassle buying it from amazon to get a cheaper price.

Do not buy if you need this book with the access code from amazon. Amazon did help me a lot with the process but over all, it's not worth it

Over-priced "textbook"
By J. S. Nelson
I will start by saying that I didn't read the book. I don't have to. I had to purchase the book for my son's college class that requires it. Being in the IT industry for over 30 years, I can say that I have purchased many IT books on far more complicated topics by great publishers that fully cover a subject and they are always in the $30-$60 range. Becuase this is "required", they feel free to jack up the price. Captive audience. There are MANY excellent books on MS Office. The only reason to pay this much is if you HAVE TO. What a racket.

An Incredible Continuation to the Spice and Wolf Series
By Steven Archer
This volume put a great story together from beginning to end. Clues are spread throughout the story for the reader to pick up on. The economics here deal with the "darker" side of dealing and trading in goods vs currency, so the author mixes things up a little when presenting resolution. We also get a surprise appearance from a character from way back, which of whom plays a major part in the story this time around. As always this is a must read for anyone reading the Spice and Wolf series, containing your fill of surprises, suspense, and light-hearted fun that we know and love.

Review

Muir and Osborne (Knit Your Own Dog, Knit Your Own Cat) have once again assembled a collection of irresistible knitted animals. This book does exactly what it says it does, offering patterns for a veritable menagerie of miniature creatures. Patterns detail familiar animals such as the elephant and crocodile, as well as such less familiar animals as the anteater or meerkat. With the clever use of pipe cleaners, these animals can stand, sit, sprawl, or, in the case of the Fruit Bat, hang from the rafters. Fun details include fringe of all types, from lion manes to orangutan fur, and color work that replicates zebra stripes, leopard spots, and even mandrill coloring, among others. Two mother-and-child duos are especially darling: a seal and pup, and a kangaroo with removable joey. Patterns require focus but are, as described in the book's subtitle, easy to follow. Devotees of knitted creatures will find a lot to love in this collection.

Another Excellent Book of Patterns for Small, Realistic, Knitted Display Animals
By Lynne E.
KNIT YOUR OWN ZOO is another fine collection of patterns for small knitted display animals (not really suitable for knitted toys) from the authors of Knit Your Own Dog and Knit Your Own Cat. These patterns are well-written, with clear instructions, but probably require advanced intermediate knitting skills (or beyond), because each animal is constructed from many small, shaped parts.

For example, the wonderful giraffe is assembled from (1) a right back leg, (2) a left back leg, (3) a right front leg, (4) a left front leg, (5) a right side of body, (6) a left side of body, (7) a head, (8) a tummy, (9) ears, (10) tail, and (11) mane. The parts for the legs are held on stitch holders until it's time to add the body; some body stitches are also held on stitch holders until it's time to add the head; and so on. The giraffe's "spots" are knitted in using Fair Isle and Intarsia methods. The mane is crocheted; the eyes are embroidered; the tail uses buttonhole stitch; the "horns" are pipe cleaners. To finish, pipe cleaners are added for support when the animal is stuffed. The patterns are written out with row-by-row instructions. The animals are knit with fine yarn on US 2 and US 3 needles.

It amazes me, how well the authors replicate the animals' essential characteristics, so that each finished animal is immediately recognizable as the zoo animal it is intended to be. I really love the giraffe, the mandrill, the bat, the armadillo, the koala, the leopard, and the crocodile!

Patterns are included for the following animals: giant anteater, armadillo, fruit bat, ring-tailed lemur, brown bear, wolf, gray seal and pup, polar bear, penguin, crocodile, koala, chimpanzee, lion, leopard, tiger, zebra, mandrill, camel, meerkat, elephant, giraffe, panda, orangutan, and kangaroo and joey.

Inadequate finishing instructions
By Deb Stanek
I am an expert knitter and I have to say these patterns are not easy, require full concentration for counting stitches and rows. I knit the panda and he literally is not written to match the picture. He has a white pattern on his chest where it is a solid black band in the photo. His over complication of stitches leaves a few messy looking spots even while knitted correctly. He is knit in all one piece. Also a bit of a surprise, this panda was much larger than I expected. I appreciate the quality of the paper and that the book will lie open. I have knit 6 of the dogs now and had to revise several rows. As I knit more of the zoo animals I expect to find the same problems. But if you are an expert, these patterns are a great starting point for creating your own animals and a great exercise in improving given directions. The print is small and there is lots of white space on each page for you to write your notes. As I knit more animals, I will update my review.

Ok now I have knitted the Koala and again I was disappointed. The tummy piece is not as shown in the picture and it turns out that to look life like that tummy piece really needs more shape. The pattern for the tummy literally has you knit a rectangle. It would work for a squirrel though. The body knitted nicely and I found no errors but you really have to keep close count on the wrap and turns. I suggest writing in at the end of each row how many stitches should be left on the needle because the author neglected to do that for us. Since this body has no apparent errors, I think you could turn it into a number of woodland animals by changing the ears, tails, and claws.

I just read in someone's review that there are many many errors in the patterns and that the author corrects them on her website, so perhaps my best advice is to check their website before beginning your project. I know I will before knitting another. The dog patterns are far less disappointing than the zoo animals have been for me. If you are going to substitute yarns, pick a lightweight with at least a little wool in it for stretch. If you are going to make many animals you can keep your yarn expense down by using Lion brand Wool ease, found here on Amazon at a very nice price in very nice colors. I have not found a substitute yet for the Kidsilk.

I've now knit the elephant, which knitted up nicely and looks like the picture in the book without editing any of the pattern. I did however, sew the tummy in before it was fully knitted and then knit it to fit. I have also knitted the polar bear who was easiest and looks good, albeit a little long and skinny. I am about to start the tiger. He's quite complicated so I'll let you all know how that goes.

A New York Times Bestseller -- Katniss Everdeen is a 16-year-old girl living with her mother and younger sister in the poorest district of Panem, the remains of what was once the United States. Long ago the districts waged war on the Capitol and were defeated. Now the Capitol demands one boy and one girl from each district to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV. When Kat’s sister is chosen by lottery, Kat steps up to go in her place.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Reviewed by Megan Whalen Turner
If there really are only seven original plots in the world, it's odd that boy meets girl is always mentioned, and society goes bad and attacks the good guy never is. Yet we have Fahrenheit 451, The Giver, The House of the Scorpion—and now, following a long tradition of Brave New Worlds, The Hunger Games. Collins hasn't tied her future to a specific date, or weighted it down with too much finger wagging. Rather less 1984 and rather more Death Race 2000, hers is a gripping story set in a postapocalyptic world where a replacement for the United States demands a tribute from each of its territories: two children to be used as gladiators in a televised fight to the death.Katniss, from what was once Appalachia, offers to take the place of her sister in the Hunger Games, but after this ultimate sacrifice, she is entirely focused on survival at any cost. It is her teammate, Peeta, who recognizes the importance of holding on to one's humanity in such inhuman circumstances. It's a credit to Collins's skill at characterization that Katniss, like a new Theseus, is cold, calculating and still likable. She has the attributes to be a winner, where Peeta has the grace to be a good loser. It's no accident that these games are presented as pop culture. Every generation projects its fear: runaway science, communism, overpopulation, nuclear wars and, now, reality TV. The State of Panem—which needs to keep its tributaries subdued and its citizens complacent—may have created the Games, but mindless television is the real danger, the means by which society pacifies its citizens and punishes those who fail to conform. Will its connection to reality TV, ubiquitous today, date the book? It might, but for now, it makes this the right book at the right time. What happens if we choose entertainment over humanity? In Collins's world, we'll be obsessed with grooming, we'll talk funny, and all our sentences will end with the same rise as questions. When Katniss is sent to stylists to be made more telegenic before she competes, she stands naked in front of them, strangely unembarrassed. They're so unlike people that I'm no more self-conscious than if a trio of oddly colored birds were pecking around my feet, she thinks. In order not to hate these creatures who are sending her to her death, she imagines them as pets. It isn't just the contestants who risk the loss of their humanity. It is all who watch. Katniss struggles to win not only the Games but the inherent contest for audience approval. Because this is the first book in a series, not everything is resolved, and what is left unanswered is the central question. Has she sacrificed too much? We know what she has given up to survive, but not whether the price was too high. Readers will wait eagerly to learn more.
Megan Whalen Turner is the author of the Newbery Honor book The Thief and its sequels, The Queen of Attolia and The King of Attolia. The next book in the series will be published by Greenwillow in 2010.

Grade 7 Up -In a not-too-distant future, the United States of America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war, to be replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 12 districts. Each year, two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games. Part entertainment, part brutal intimidation of the subjugated districts, the televised games are broadcasted throughout Panem as the 24 participants are forced to eliminate their competitors, literally, with all citizens required to watch. When 16-year-old Katniss's young sister, Prim, is selected as the mining district's female representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and her male counterpart, Peeta, the son of the town baker who seems to have all the fighting skills of a lump of bread dough, will be pitted against bigger, stronger representatives who have trained for this their whole lives. Collins's characters are completely realistic and sympathetic as they form alliances and friendships in the face of overwhelming odds; the plot is tense, dramatic, and engrossing. This book will definitely resonate with the generation raised on reality shows like 'Survivor' and 'American Gladiator.' Book one of a planned trilogy.Jane Henriksen Baird, Anchorage Public Library, AK

From Booklist
*Starred Review* This is a grand-opening salvo in a new series by the author of the Underland Chronicles. Sixteen-year-old Katniss poaches food for her widowed mother and little sister from the forest outside the legal perimeter of District 12, the poorest of the dozen districts constituting Panem, the North American dystopic state that has replaced the U.S. in the not-too-distant future. Her hunting and tracking skills serve her well when she is then cast into the nation’s annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death where contestants must battle harsh terrain, artificially concocted weather conditions, and two teenaged contestants from each of Panem’s districts. District 12’s second “tribute” is Peeta, the baker’s son, who has been in love with Katniss since he was five. Each new plot twist ratchets up the tension, moving the story forward and keeping the reader on edge. Although Katniss may be skilled with a bow and arrow and adept at analyzing her opponents’ next moves, she has much to learn about personal sentiments, especially her own. Populated by three-dimensional characters, this is a superb tale of physical adventure, political suspense, and romance. Grades 9-12. --Francisca Goldsmith

Unexpected Direction, but Perfection (Potential spoilers, but pretty vague)
By A. R. Bovey
This was a brilliant conclusion to the trilogy. I can only compare it to "Ender's Game" - and that is extremely high praise, indeed.

When I first closed the book last night, I felt shattered, empty, and drained.

And that was the point, I think. I'm glad I waited to review the book because I'm not sure what my review would have been.

For the first two books, I think most of us readers have all been laboring under the assumption that Katniss Everdeen would eventually choose one of the two terrific men in her life: Gale, her childhood companion or Peeta, the one who accompanied her to the Hunger Games twice. She'd pick one of them and live happily ever after with him, surrounded by friends and family. Somehow, along the way, Katniss would get rid of the awful President Snow and stop the evil Hunger Games. How one teenage girl would do all that, we weren't too sure, but we all had faith and hope that she would.

"Mockingjay" relentlessly strips aside those feelings of faith and hope - much as District 13 must have done to Katniss. Katniss realizes that she is just as much a pawn for District 13 as she ever was for the Colony and that evil can exist in places outside of the Colony.

And that's when the reader realizes that this will be a very different journey. And that maybe the first two books were a setup for a very different ride. That, at its heart, this wasn't a story about Katniss making her romantic decisions set against a backdrop of war.

This is a story of war. And what it means to be a volunteer and yet still be a pawn. We have an entirely volunteer military now that is spread entirely too thin for the tasks we ask of it. The burden we place upon it is great. And at the end of the day, when the personal war is over for each of them, each is left alone to pick up the pieces as best he/she can.

For some, like Peeta, it means hanging onto the back of a chair until the voices in his head stop and he's safe to be around again. Each copes in the best way he can. We ask - no, demand - incredible things of our men and women in arms, and then relegate them to the sidelines afterwards because we don't want to be reminded of the things they did in battle. What do you do with people who are trained to kill when they come back home? And what if there's no real home to come back to - if, heaven forbid, the war is fought in your own home? We need our soldiers when we need them, but they make us uncomfortable when the fighting stops.

All of that is bigger than a love story - than Peeta or Gale. And yet, Katniss' war does come to an end. And she does have to pick up the pieces of her life and figure out where to go at the end. So she does make a choice. But compared to the tragedy of everything that comes before it, it doesn't seem "enough". And I think that's the point. That once you've been to hell and lost so much, your life will never be the same. Katniss will never be the same. For a large part of this book, we see Katniss acting in a way that we can only see as being combat-stress or PTSD-related - running and hiding in closets. This isn't our Katniss, this isn't our warrior girl.

But this is what makes it so much more realistic, I think. Some may see this as a failing in plot - that Katniss is suddenly acting out of character. But as someone who has been around very strong soldiers returning home from deployments, this story, more than the other two, made Katniss come alive for me in a much more believable way.

I realize many out there will hate the epilogue and find it trite. At first, I did too. But in retrospect, it really was perfect. Katniss gave her life already - back when she volunteered for Prim in "The Hunger Games". It's just that she actually physically kept living.

The HBO miniseries, "Band of Brothers", has a quote that sums this up perfectly. When Captain Spiers says, "The only hope you have is to accept the fact that you're already dead. The sooner you accept that, the sooner you'll be able to function as a soldier is supposed to function: without mercy, without compassion, without remorse. All war depends upon it."

But how do you go from that, to living again in society? You really don't. So I'm not sure Katniss ever really did - live again. She just ... kept going. And there's not really much to celebrate in that. Seeing someone keep going, despite being asked - no, demanded - to do unconscionably horrifying things, and then being relegated to the fringes of society, and then to keep going - to pick up the pieces and keep on going, there is something fine and admirable and infinitely sad and pure and noble about that. But the fact is, it should never happen in the first place.

And that was the point, I think.

Beautiful set at a reasonable price.
By Tawny9753
I love the series and loaned it out to several friends and family. By the time the books made it back to me they were more than a little beat up. I passed them along to a young cousin of mine. When I saw this set I knew I could buy it to keep for myself. The foil set is gorgeous and even though they are just paperbacks and will get creased with time the case will stay nice.

This is a series that is meant for young adults but it turned out to be a fun, fast read for me. I highly recommend this to anyone, it is a pop culture phenomenon for a reason.

Character Recognition Systems: A Guide for Students and Practitioners, by Mohamed Cheriet, Nawwaf Kharma, Cheng-Lin Liu, Ching Suen

"Much of pattern recognition theory and practice, including methods such as Support Vector Machines, has emerged in an attempt to solve the character recognition problem. This book is written by very well-known academics who have worked in the field for many years and have made significant and lasting contributions. The book will no doubt be of value to students and practitioners."
-Sargur N. Srihari, SUNY Distinguished Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, and Director, Center of Excellence for Document Analysis and Recognition (CEDAR), University at Buffalo, The State University of New York

"The disciplines of optical character recognition and document image analysis have a history of more than forty years. In the last decade, the importance and popularity of these areas have grown enormously. Surprisingly, however, the field is not well covered by any textbook. This book has been written by prominent leaders in the field. It includes all important topics in optical character recognition and document analysis, and is written in a very coherent and comprehensive style. This book satisfies an urgent need. It is a volume the community has been awaiting for a long time, and I can enthusiastically recommend it to everybody working in the area."
-Horst Bunke, Professor, Institute of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics (IAM), University of Bern, Switzerland

In Character Recognition Systems, the authors provide practitioners and students with the fundamental principles and state-of-the-art computational methods of reading printed texts and handwritten materials. The information presented is analogous to the stages of a computer recognition system, helping readers master the theory and latest methodologies used in character recognition in a meaningful way.

This book covers:
*

Perspectives on the history, applications, and evolution of Optical Character Recognition (OCR)
*

The most widely used pre-processing techniques, as well as methods for extracting character contours and skeletons
*

Evaluating extracted features, both structural and statistical
*

Modern classification methods that are successful in character recognition, including statistical methods, Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), Support Vector Machines (SVM), structural methods, and multi-classifier methods
*

An overview of word and string recognition methods and techniques
*

Case studies that illustrate practical applications, with descriptions of the methods and theories behind the experimental results

Each chapter contains major steps and tricks to handle the tasks described at-hand. Researchers and graduate students in computer science and engineering will find this book useful for designing a concrete system in OCR technology, while practitioners will rely on it as a valuable resource for the latest advances and modern technologies that aren't covered elsewhere in a single book.
